TL;DR: The results of observations of the muscular anatomy of thirty-four subjects, chiefly of the male sex, with an especial view to the study of the combinations of these abnormalities, are given, and the directions in which they chiefly tend are tabulated.
Abstract: In the present paper are given the results of observations, made with the greatest possible accuracy and care, of the muscular anatomy of thirty-four subjects, chiefly of the male sex, with an especial view to the study of the combinations of these abnormalities, and the directions in which they chiefly tend. To enable the reader more readily to comprehend these results, the author has tabulated them in the sheet appended to the paper. In the Table the names of the muscles placed at the head of each column refer to those in which more than one variety has been observed in the session. They will be found to correspond very closely with those given in the former papers by the author. In columns 21, and 27 are placed those of which only one example has been met with. Some of these, however, are of much importance. To explain the nature of the abnormality more precisely than could be done in the Table, a word or two will be necessary on such of the specimens as may be considered novel or typical.

TL;DR: The authors re-design academic writing protocols for design education, adopting a more empathetic model to make writing more like designing for a specified client, which may be useful in the competitive culture of bureaucratic work.
Abstract: Historically, the culture of design education reflects an uneasy liaison between the mediaeval monastic (‘book’) and the crafts guilds (‘design studio’) traditions. For this reason it has been difficult to integrate both modes of knowledge in design education. Common misunderstandings about ‘scholastic rigour’ are symptomatic of this confusion. ‘Rigorous’ writing is fundamentally rule-based and organizational, and can therefore be at odds with the situated, opportunistic judgements involved with much design practice. We should therefore re-design academic writing protocols for design education.By thinking about ‘rigour’ we may absolve it, perhaps adopting a more empathetic model to make writing more like designing for a specified client. The standard school essay implies a 180° relationship between authors and their unknown readers. It is profoundly linear, fact-based and rhetorical, therefore it may be useful in the competitive culture of bureaucratic work. For this reason, we need better practices of ‘s...

TL;DR: Wood et al. as discussed by the authors argue that the natural world is a self-organising, inclusive and holistic system that reduces its own entropy by embracing and optimising difference, and they advocate a planning discourse that encourages greater reciprocal opportunity and perceived mutual advantage for all "eco-aware" citizens.
Abstract: Despite a growing concern about climate change, losses in bio-diversity, etc., the developing world continues to build cities inspired by the same profligate lifestyle that was a main cause of the problem. A solution, however, seems to be beyond the scope of individual citizens, designers or planners. Even politicians appear unwilling or unable to confront the issues in a serious way. One reason for this is that the discourse of ‘sustainability’ is sometimes confused, self-contradictory and unappealing to voters and consumers. The article explores this problem, suggesting that a more effective discourse would probably need to inspire us into leading a more ‘natural’ lifestyle that is, therefore, more synergistic on every level. It argues that the natural world is a self-organising, inclusive and holistic system that reduces its own entropy by embracing and optimising difference. In emulating such a system, the article advocates a planning discourse that encourages greater reciprocal opportunity and perceived mutual advantage for all ‘eco-aware’ citizens. This would mean that, instead of discussing reduced consumption, we try to envision synergistic urban living styles that are desirable, attainable, maintainable and reproducible [Wood, J., November 2003. Could Synergies of Relations in Design Become the Basis for Professional Standards of Eudemonia? Refereed paper given at the FutureGround conference, Melbourne]. In addressing these issues, the article refers to a current research project that is exploring the need for more inclusive synergies within meta-design. This pilot project found that it would be hard to develop ‘eco-cities’ without generating a strong consensus that includes the business community, consumers, politicians, educators, bankers and developers. It asks whether planners might have to become more visible, entrepreneurial and trans-disciplinary. This would probably lead to closer collaboration between a wider range of enlightened professionals at a much higher level.

TL;DR: The Creative City as discussed by the authors is a classic and has been republished many times, aiming to make readers feel: "I can do that too" and to spread confidence that creative and innovative solutions to urban problems are feasible however bad they may seem at first sight.
Abstract: The Creative City is now a classic and has been republished many times. It is an ambitious book and a clarion call for imaginative action in running urban life. It seeks to inspire people to think, plan and act imaginatively in the city and to get an ideas factory going that turns urban innovations into reality. Its aim is to make readers feel: ‘I can do that too’ and to spread confidence that creative and innovative solutions to urban problems are feasible however bad they may seem at first sight.

TL;DR: A provisional diagram of modern capitalist business is presented in this article, where the authors argue that modern business managers are under greater and greater pressures of time, and that these imperatives are linked through attempts to interpellate "fast" managerial subjects who are able to take the strain of permanent high performance.
Abstract: This paper provides a provisional diagram of modern capitalist business. I argue that modern business managers are under greater and greater pressures of time. They are expected to work to sterner, more extensive, and shorter-term measures of performance, and they must cope with a general speed-up in the conduct of business. These pressures are, in turn, forcing managers to be more innovative. In this paper, I argue that these imperatives are linked through attempts to interpellate ‘fast’ managerial subjects who are able to take the strain of permanent high performance. These subjects are being produced through three types of active and performative space which, taken together, constitute a new geographical machine, able to make new qualities and quantities visible and therefore available to be worked upon. I consider each of these spaces in turn: new spaces of visualization, represented here by the business magazine Fast Company; new spaces of embodiment, represented here by the use of performative ideas...
