The reactions of the soft diphosphines o-C6H4(PMe2)2, Me2P(CH2)2PMe2, Et2P(CH2)2PEt2 or o-C6H4(PPh2)2 with NbF5 or TaF5 in anhydrous MeCN solution produce [MF4(diphosphine)2][MF6] (M = Nb or Ta), which have been characterised by microanalysis, IR, 1H, 19F{1H}, 31P{1H} and 93Nb NMR spectroscopy. X-ray crystal structures are reported for the isomorphous [MF4{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}2][MF6], which confirm the presence of eight-coordinate (distorted dodecahedral) cations. The corresponding reactions using o-C6H4(AsMe2)2 produced [MF4{o-C6H4(AsMe2)2}2][MF6] which were similarly characterised, including by the X-ray structure of [NbF4{o-C6H4(AsMe2)2}2][NbF6]. These are very rare examples of arsine complexes of high valent metal fluorides. The chloro complexes [NbCl4{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}2]Cl, [TaCl4{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}2][TaCl6], [NbCl4{Me2P(CH2)2PMe2}2][NbCl6] and [MCl4{o-C6H4(AsMe2)2}2][MCl6] were prepared and their structural and spectroscopic properties compared with the fluoride analogues. Attempts to prepare diphosphine complexes of NbOF3 were unsuccessful, but the NbOCl3 complexes, [{{Me2P(CH2)2PMe2}NbOCl3}2{μ-Me2P(CH2)2PMe2}] and [{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}NbOCl3(μ-O)NbCl3(CH3CN){o-C6H4(PMe2)2}] were obtained. X-Ray structures are also reported for [NbCl4{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}2]Cl, [NbCl4{o-C6H4(AsMe2)2}2][NbCl5(OEt)], [NbCl4{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}2][NbOCl4(CH3CN)], [{{Me2P(CH2)2PMe2}NbOCl3}2{μ-Me2P(CH2)2PMe2}] and [{o-C6H4(PMe2)2}NbOCl3(μ-O)NbCl3(CH3CN){o-C6H4(PMe2)2}].

The 1:1 molar reactions of NbOX3 with SnBu3H, in toluene at 0 °C in the presence of oxygen/nitrogen donors, resulted in the formation of NbOX2L2 (X = Cl, L2 = dme, 2a; X = Br, L2 = dme, 2b; X = Cl, L = thf, 2c; X = Cl, L = NCMe, 2d; dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane, thf = tetrahydrofuran), in good yields. The 1:2 reactions of freshly prepared 2d and 2b with the bulky NHC ligands 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene, Imes, and 1,3-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene, Ixyl, respectively, afforded the complexes NbOCl2(Imes)2, 3, and NbOBr2(Ixyl)2, 4, in 50–60% yields. The reactions of 2b with NaOR, in tetrahydrofuran, gave NbOCl(OR) (R = Ph, 5; R = Me, 6) in about 60% yields. Coordination complexes of the tungsten(VI) oxide fluorides WOF4 and WO2F2 with neutral oxygen and nitrogen donor ligands

The first series of complexes of niobium(V) oxide trifluoride, [NbOF3(OPR3)2] (R = Me or Ph), [NbOF3(dppmO2)] (dppmO2 = Ph2P(O)CH2P(O)Ph2), [NbOF3(dmso)2], [NbOF3(tmeda)] (tmeda = Me2N(CH2)2NMe2) and [NbOF3(diimine)] (diimine = 2,2′-bipy, 1,10-phen) have been prepared, either by reaction of the corresponding complexes of NbF5 and hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) in CH2Cl2–MeCN solution, or directly from NbF5, ligand and HMDSO. They were characterised by IR, 1H, 31P{1H} and 19F{1H} NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystal structures are reported for [NbOF3(OPR3)2] (R = Me or Ph) and [NbOF3(dppmO2)]. Complexes of NbOCl3, [NbOCl3(OPPh3)2], [NbOCl3(dppmO2)], [NbOCl3(dppeO2)] (dppeO2 = Ph2P(O)(CH2)2P(O)Ph2), [NbOCl3(tmeda)] and [NbOCl3(diimine)] were made from NbCl5 and HMDSO in MeCN (which forms [NbOCl3(MeCN)2] in situ), followed by addition of the neutral ligand. Their properties are compared with the oxide fluoride analogues. X-ray structures are reported for [NbOCl3(dppmO2)], [NbOCl3(dppeO2)], [NbOCl3(tmeda)] and [NbOCl3(2,2′-bipy)]. The synthesis and spectroscopic characterisation of [MF5L] (M = Nb or Ta; L = OPR3, OAsPh3) and [MF4(diimine)2][MF6] are also described, and the key properties of the four series of complexes compared.
