Guidelines for the Provision and Assessment of Nutrition Support Therapy in the Adult Critically Ill Patient Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.)
Nilesh M. Mehta,Heather E. Skillman,Sharon Y. Irving,Jorge A. Coss-Bu,Sarah Vermilyea,Elizabeth Anne Farrington,Liam McKeever,Amber M. Hall,Praveen S. Goday,Carol L. Braunschweig +9 more
TL;DR: The guidelines reiterate the importance of nutrition assessment-particularly, the detection of malnourished patients who are most vulnerable and therefore may benefit from timely intervention and there is a need for renewed focus on accurate estimation of energy needs and attention to optimizing protein intake.
Journal ArticleDOI
Severe Staphylococcal Sepsis in Adolescents in the Era of Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Blanca E. Gonzalez,Gerardo Martínez-Aguilar,Gerardo Martínez-Aguilar,Kristina G. Hulten,Kristina G. Hulten,Wendy A. Hammerman,Wendy A. Hammerman,Jorge A. Coss-Bu,Jorge A. Coss-Bu,Anna Avalos-Mishaan,Anna Avalos-Mishaan,Edward O. Mason,Edward O. Mason,Sheldon L. Kaplan,Sheldon L. Kaplan +14 more
TL;DR: Severe staphylococcal infections in previously healthy adolescents without predisposing risk factors have presented more frequently at Texas Children's Hospital since September 2002, with an increase in the number of severely ill patients with S aureus infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Guidelines for the Provision and Assessment of Nutrition Support Therapy in the Pediatric Critically Ill Patient: Society of Critical Care Medicine and American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition
Nilesh M. Mehta,Heather E. Skillman,Sharon Y. Irving,Jorge A. Coss-Bu,Sarah Vermilyea,Elizabeth Anne Farrington,Liam McKeever,Amber M. Hall,Praveen S. Goday,Carol L. Braunschweig +9 more
TL;DR: This document represents the first collaboration between two organizations, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, to describe best practices in nutrition therapy in critically ill children.
Journal ArticleDOI
Energy metabolism, nitrogen balance, and substrate utilization in critically ill children
Jorge A. Coss-Bu,William J. Klish,David Walding,Fernando Stein,E. O'Brian Smith,Larry S. Jefferson +5 more
TL;DR: Critically ill children are hypermetabolic and in negative NB, fat is used preferentially for oxidation and carbohydrate is utilized poorly in this population, so a high carbohydrate intake was associated with lipogenesis and less fat oxidation, a negative NB was associatedwith high oxidation rates for protein, and a high protein intake wasassociated with a positive NB.
Journal ArticleDOI
Body composition during growth in children: limitations and perspectives of bioelectrical impedance analysis.
TL;DR: It is suggested that BIA-derived body composition and phase angle measurements are valuable to assess nutritional status and growth in children, and may be useful to determine baseline measurements at hospital admission, and to monitor progress of nutrition treatment or change in nutritional status during hospitalization.
