Journal Article

Interplay between promoter and structural gene variants control basal serum level of mannan-binding protein.

TL;DR: This work describes the existence of additional polymorphisms at positions -550 (H/L variants) and -221 (X/Y variants) in the promoter region of the MBP gene and represents a genetic system with additive effect of haplotypes in which a low producing LX haplotype in the homozygous state down-regulates the basal expression of MBP as effectively as a single structural variant.
Journal ArticleDOI

Plasmodium falciparum Variant Surface Antigen Expression Varies Between Isolates Causing Severe and Nonsevere Malaria and Is Modified by Acquired Immunity

TL;DR: The data suggest that acquisition of VSA-specific Ab responses gradually restricts the VSA repertoire that is compatible with parasite survival in the semi-immune host, and opens the possibility of developing morbidity-reducing vaccines targeting a limited subset of common and particularly virulent VSA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Maintaining the Immunological Balance in Parasitic Infections: A Role for TGF-β?

TL;DR: Data from murine malaria infections suggest that TGF-beta modifies the severity of the disease, and a number of potential protective mechanisms are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Malaria-induced acquisition of antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum variant surface antigens.

TL;DR: The hypothesis that naturally acquired protective immunity to P. falciparum malaria is mediated, at least in part, by VSA-specific antibodies is supported.
