TL;DR: This paper shows how semantic technologies introduce new methods of learning by supporting teachers in the creation of contents and students in the personalized identification of required knowledge in HermesWiki.
Abstract: The HermesWiki project is a semantic wiki application on Ancient Greek History. As an e-learning platform, it aims at providing students effective access to concise and reliable domain knowledge, that is especially important for exam preparation. In this paper, we show how semantic technologies introduce new methods of learning by supporting teachers in the creation of contents and students in the personalized identification of required knowledge. Therefore, we give an overview of the project and characterize the semi-formalized content. Additionally, we present several use cases and describe the semantic web techniques that are used to support the application. Furthermore, we report on the user experiences regarding the usefulness and applicability of semantic technologies in this context.

TL;DR: The history of professional war games is usually understood to have begun around the turn of the 18th to the 19th century and mainly associated with the Prussian Kriegsspiel, with chess-based predecessors traceable down to a game published in 1664 by Christoph Weickmann as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The history of professional war gaming is usually understood to have begun around the turn of the 18th to the 19th century and mainly associated with the Prussian Kriegsspiel, with chess-based predecessors traceable down to a game published in 1664 by Christoph Weickmann. Yet already a century before Weickmann and more than two centuries before the invention of the Prussian Kriegsspiel a Hessian nobleman published a game of cards that was intended to be used both for preparing young noblemen for military decision-making and for supporting command and control in the field. It thus may well have been the earliest professional war game of the post-medieval period.

TL;DR: The Kriegsspiel as discussed by the authors, the world's first professional conflict simulation in official use, became a key element for learning how to make best use of the new technology.
Abstract: The nineteenth century saw dramatic changes in military technology that profoundly changed the nature of warfare, and integrating the performance of that new technology into the existing operational and tactical thinking became hugely important. In Prussia, from 1824 onwards, the Kriegsspiel , the world’s first professional conflict simulation in official use, became a key element for learning how to make best use of the new technology. Between 1824 and 1871, the rules went through several different editions, each one revised according to the latest technological and tactical developments. The paper will provide a brief historical introduction, then concentrate on the impact of technological innovations on the rules, and finally show that the Kriegsspiel and its non-Prussian counterparts are essential for understanding how military establishments in and beyond Europe reacted to the impact of technology on war.

Abstract: This thesis explores the early phases of marketing activity in Britain by investigating the supply-chains through which imports arrived during the Roman period. The study adopts a cross-disciplinary approach which draws on archaeological evidence, as few written records survive from this era. The investigation commences with a review of the structure of the Roman economy, after which the characteristic features of a traditional supply-chain are presented and the roles and relationships of its key members examined. The empirical evidence relating to cross-channel exchange in the Romano-British period (c. 120 BC-AD 410) is reviewed by means of four product-based case studies; two of which relate to amphorae-borne commodities (olive-oil and wine) and two involve types of ceramic pottery (samian ware and Rhenish-beakers). The contribution of this thesis is to combine methodologies from apparently disparate fields such as archaeology and marketing to enable new questions to be asked of existing data to enhance understanding in each discipline. In addition to using archaeological evidence to trace the evolution of marketing practices in the Romano-British period, the reciprocal aim of the study was to explore ways in which archaeologists may be able to utilize economic and marketing models to offer new insights into their own subject area. Supply-chain analysis forms the central focus of this thesis. Its main insight is to recognize that through their contacts with clients in both Britain and Gaul, Romano-British and Gallo-Roman merchants must inevitably have gained asymmetric knowledge of market conditions in each location, thus enabling them through their choice of cargoes to control the vital ‘choke-point’ of the channel-crossing. In addition to the principal theme of supply-chain analysis, the inclusion of economic and marketing models such as industrial location criteria (Weber, 1929; Ohlin, 1933) and product-cycle analysis (Vernon, 1966; Wells, 1968) all represent new applications of business theories to the archaeological domain and add to the uniqueness of this research.

TL;DR: It is shown that a semantic wiki is a flexible tool for engineering knowledge on the knowledge formalization continuum, and the agile use of knowledge representations within a knowledge engineering project is proposed, as well as transitions between the different representations, when required.
Abstract: In spite of their industrial success, the development of intelligent systems is still a complex and risky task. When building intelligent systems, we see that domain knowledge is often present at different levels of formalization-ranging from text documents to explicit rules. In this paper, we describe the knowledge formalization continuum as a metaphor to help domain specialists during the knowledge acquisition phase. To make use of the knowledge formalization continuum, the agile use of knowledge representations within a knowledge engineering project is proposed, as well as transitions between the different representations, when required. We show that a semantic wiki is a flexible tool for engineering knowledge on the knowledge formalization continuum. Case studies are taken from one industrial and one academic project, and they illustrate the applicability and benefits of semantic wikis in combination with the knowledge formalization continuum.

TL;DR: A new approach to implement state-of-the-art decision support systems in a coherent manner is introduced based on semantic technologies and web standards and integrates semantic technologies as a fundamental layer by combining the W3C ontologies PROV-O and SKOS.
Abstract: Decision support systems rely on collaborative and episodic participation.Large decision knowledge bases can include varying knowledge representations. We introduce an approach to implement such systems in a coherent manner. The approach is based on semantic technologies and web standards.A case study describes experiences with a decision support system in industrial use for years. The paper describes a new approach of developing and maintaining state-of-the-art decision support systems. Such systems are able to capture the collaborative work on decision problems over time. Due to the complexity of large problem spaces a multi-modal knowledge representation is proposed. For the realization of a multi-modal knowledge base we integrate semantic technologies as a fundamental layer by combining the W3C ontologies PROV-O and SKOS. The approach is demonstrated by an implementation report of an industrially deployed decision support system.
