Abstract: This paper evaluates the impacts on energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the introduction of electric vehicles into a smart grid, as a case study. The AVL Cruise software was used to simulate two vehicles, one electric and the other engine-powered, both operating under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), in order to calculate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, fuel consumption and energy efficiency. Available carbon dioxide data from electric power generation in Brazil were used for comparison with the simulated results. In addition, scenarios of gradual introduction of electric vehicles in a taxi fleet operating with a smart grid system in Sete Lagoas city, MG, Brazil, were made to evaluate their impacts. The results demonstrate that CO2 emissions from the electric vehicle fleet can be from 10 to 26 times lower than that of the engine-powered vehicle fleet. In addition, the scenarios indicate that even with high factors of CO2 emissions from energy generation, significant reductions of annual emissions are obtained with the introduction of electric vehicles in the fleet.

Abstract: Organic solar cells (OSCs) have developed progressively in efficiency over the last two decades. Though it is promising, this technology is still far from realizing its full prospect. One of the most important parameters that determine the efficiency of OSCs is the open-circuit voltage (VOC), which represents the maximum voltage a solar cell can provide to an external circuit. Light harvesting materials employed in OSCs have an optical band gap of around 1.7 to 2.1 eV and yet the VOC barely exceeds 1.0 V, which is approximately just half of the photon's original energy. By contrast, in inorganic counterparts such as Si, CIGS and GaAs, the difference is only 0.3 to 0.45 eV between the material bandgap and VOC. Hence, to achieve higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in OSCs, a detailed understanding of the origins of VOC and the associated energetic loss mechanisms is indispensable. The presented review takes the opportunity to elaborate various governing mechanisms and factors affecting the VOC from a comprehensive yet insightful standpoint. This report also provides a concise synthesis of intricate interdependencies among the factors influencing VOC and highlights the potential research strategies to improve VOC, rendering possible pathways to facilitate the viable commercialization of OSCs.

Abstract: This review paper covers potential alternative fuels for automotive engine application for both spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) engines. It also includes applications of alternative fuels in advanced combustion research applications. The representative alternative fuels for SI engines include compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrogen (H 2 ) liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and alcohol fuels (methanol and ethanol); while for CI engines, they include biodiesel, di-methyl ether (DME), and jet propellent-8 (JP-8). Naphtha is introduced as an alternative fuel for advanced combustion in premixed charge compression ignition. The production, storage, and the supply chain of each alternative fuel are briefly summarized, and are followed by discussions on the main research motivations for such alternative fuels. Literature surveys are presented that investigate the relative advantages and disadvantages of these alternative fuels for application to engine combustion. The contents of engine combustion basically consist of the combustion process from spray development, air–fuel mixing characteristics, to the final combustion product formation process, which is analyzed for each alternative fuel. An overview is provided for alternative fuels together with summaries of engine combustion characteristics for each fuel, in addition to its current distribution status and future prospects.
