TL;DR: Insight is provided into the experiences of supervisors of midwives and the way they gain the skills and knowledge required for the role and the interfaces between SoM and LSA MO.
Abstract: The role of supervisors of midwives (SoM) with regards to risk management is set out in Rule 15 of the Midwives Rules and Standards (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2004) to ensure that incidents which cause serious concern relating to maternity care or midwifery practice are notified to the local supervising authority midwifery officer (LSA MO). Case study research was undertaken to explore the interface of SoMs in the notification of critical incidents and provided a detailed and balanced account of the phenomenon of statutory supervision and their role in notification of serious untoward incidents. This article will provide greater insight into the experiences of supervisors of midwives and the way they gain the skills and knowledge required for the role.

TL;DR: The findings indicate that as a result of attending the study day, midwives are now accessing supervision on a more regular basis, rather than just for the annual review, which is a definite increase in the number of midwives who consider supervision to be effective.
Abstract: A qualitative research study was conducted to ascertain if a study day on the role of the supervisor, would encourage midwives to actively access supervision on a more regular basis. An audit was conducted prior to the study day, and a second audit 6 months after attendance. The aim was to assess if the acquired knowledge would empower midwives to increase their access to supervision. The sample involved 219 Shropshire midwives and the first audit return rate was 100%, return rate for the second audit was 60%. The data analysis was undertaken by the trust clinical audit department, which enabled independent analysis. The findings indicate that as a result of attending the study day, midwives are now accessing supervision on a more regular basis, rather than just for the annual review. There was also a definite increase in the number of midwives who consider supervision to be effective, and 77% of midwives felt the study day had developed their midwifery practice.

TL;DR: The Local Supervising Authority in Wales has mapped out a revised model for the delivery of statutory supervision that will be sustainable, cost effective, minimise the current risks facing Health Boards and the LSA, and one that will enable supervision to demonstrate quality and added value whilst meeting its main objective of enhancing public protection.
Abstract: The Local Supervising Authority (LSA) in Wales, working closely with Directors of Nursing, Heads of Midwifery, Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Welsh Government and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) have mapped out a revised model for the delivery of statutory supervision that will be sustainable, cost effective, minimise the current risks facing Health Boards and the LSA, and one that will enable supervision to demonstrate quality and added value whilst meeting its main objective of enhancing public protection. The overarching purpose of this change is to improve the quality of statutory supervision in Wales through the appointment of supervisors, to work full time as a Supervisor of Midwives (SoM) for a rotational 18 month period. The SoMs will be dedicated to the role of supervision, increasing their visibility and accessibility to midwives and service users. It is considered that this model will enable more efficient and proactive management of investigations, external to employing Health Boards...

TL;DR: Case study research was undertaken to explore the interface of supervisors of midwives in the notification of critical incidents and provided a detailed and balanced account of the phenomenon of statutory supervision and the role of the LSA MO in notification of serious untoward incidents.
Abstract: Supervision of midwives is a statutory responsibility providing a mechanism for support and guidance to every midwife practising in the UK (Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2008a). The role of supervisors with regards to risk management is set out in Rule 15 of the Midwives Rules and Standards (NMC, 2004) to ensure that incidents which cause serious concern relating to maternity care or midwifery practice are notified to the Local Supervising Authority Midwifery Officer (LSA MO). TL;DR: A methodological review of midwifery case study research using recognized templates, frameworks and reporting guidelines facilitated comprehensive analysis, identifying both case studyResearch's applicability to midWifery and its low uptake.
Abstract: Aim To explore the use and application of case study research in midwifery. Background Case study research provides rich data for the analysis of complex issues and interventions in the healthcare disciplines; however, a gap in the midwifery research literature was identified. Design A methodological review of midwifery case study research using recognized templates, frameworks and reporting guidelines facilitated comprehensive analysis. Data Sources An electronic database search using the date range January 2005–December 2014: Maternal and Infant Care, CINAHL Plus, Academic Search Complete, Web of Knowledge, SCOPUS, Medline, Health Collection (Informit), Cochrane Library Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, Wiley online and ProQuest Central. Review Methods Narrative evaluation was undertaken. Clearly worded questions reflected the problem and purpose. The application, strengths and limitations of case study methods were identified through a quality appraisal process. Results The review identified both case study research's applicability to midwifery and its low uptake, especially in clinical studies. Many papers included the necessary criteria to achieve rigour. The included measures of authenticity and methodology were varied. A high standard of authenticity was observed, suggesting authors considered these elements to be routine inclusions. Technical aspects were lacking in many papers, namely a lack of reflexivity and incomplete transparency of processes. Conclusion This review raises the profile of case study research in midwifery. Midwives will be encouraged to explore if case study research is suitable for their investigation. The raised profile will demonstrate further applicability; encourage support and wider adoption in the midwifery setting.

TL;DR: More research is needed to examine ways in which statutory supervision contributes to patient safety and high quality care and what opportunities there may be for the statutory framework to develop and empower midwives to work within current and future contexts of maternity care.
Abstract: Within the United Kingdom, the statutory supervision of midwives has a central role in both the provision of safe, high-quality maternity services and in the regulation of midwifery practice. Despite its long history, little is currently known about how midwives and their supervisors perceive and experience the statutory supervisory process.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that the training has the potential to extend capacity and capability for student supervision across health professions and in Health Workforce Australia’s identified priority areas of mental health, community health, rehabilitation, private practice, and non-government organisations.
Abstract: As a response to an Australian shortage of clinical health, nursing, and medical placements, Commonwealth Government funding has been directed to expand student training opportunities and increase the competence and number of available clinical supervisors. This paper evaluates the application of a particular supervision training model for this purpose. It considers the model’s suitability and relevance across professions and its impact on supervisory knowledge, skills, and values as well as the intention to supervise students. The design, delivery, and evaluation of a series of one-day introductory student clinical supervision training workshops for allied health disciplines, nursing, and medicine are considered. Participants evaluated Proctor’s model of clinical supervision, which was expanded by the trainers to incorporate diversity and power relations in student supervision. Evaluation results suggest that adapting Proctor’s model for student clinical supervision is relevant across a broad range of health disciplines and clinical areas. Participants from 11 health professions reported that the training improved their knowledge, skills, and values and expanded their willingness to accept student clinical placements. The outcomes are suggestive of enhanced clinical supervision intent, capacity, and capability. The student supervision training improved participants’ confidence in their clinical supervision skills. The findings suggest that the training has the potential to extend capacity and capability for student supervision across health professions and in Health Workforce Australia’s identified priority areas of mental health, community health, rehabilitation, private practice, and non-government organisations. Findings also indicate that these gains are reliant on health organizations developing and sustaining cultures of learning.
