Background: Menopause is a physiological process in women's life. The aim of this study was to assess QOL and related factors among menopausal women in Kashan city in Iran. Methods: Seven hundred women aged 40–60 years were assessed using cluster sampling. Women with mental and physical problems or systemic diseases were excluded. Data were collected by standard questionnaire of quality of life in the menopause. Results: The mean menopausal age was 47.6±4.1 years. 55.6% of women had been postmenopausal for less than 5 years. The overall mean scores obtained for each domain was 2.82±1.64 for vasomotor, 2.71±1.2 for psychosocial, 2.46±0.99 for physical and 2.89±1.73 for sexual domains. Conclusion: Age, working status, physical activity, educational level, duration of menopause, income satisfaction, marriage satisfaction and the number of children in those living with family had influence on quality of life in menopausal women.

Assessment of Quality of Life in Menopausal Periods: A Population Study in Kashan, Iran

【Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a closed endotracheal suction system(CES) on oxygen saturation, ventilator associated pneumonia(VAP), and nursing efficacy in mechanically ventilated patients. Method: This study was conducted in the intensive care unit of a University Hospital in Gwangju City. Data was collected from July to October, 2003. Seventy mechanically ventilated patients were randomly divided into two groups; 32 for CES and 38 for open endotracheal suction system(OES) protocol. Twenty one nurses were also involved to examine the nurses' attitude of usefulness about CES. Result: $SaO_2$ was significantly different between CES and OES. The incidence of VAP in CES was lower than that of OES. Nursing efficacy was related to time, cost, and usefulness of the suction system. Time of suctioning in CES was shorter than that of OES. CES also contributed significantly to lower the cost of treatment than OES. The usefulness score of CES increased after 6 months of use. Conclusion: CES prevented VAP, was cost effective, and a safe suctioning system. CES can be used with patients with sensitivity to hypoxygenation and with a high risk of VAP.】

Influencing factors on symptoms of stress among hospital staff nurses

Purpose: Natural menopause resulting in the decline in endogenous estrogen concentrations is responsible for an increased risk of coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a 6-month Tai Chi exercise program on cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life in post-menopausal women. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest measures was used. The participants in the study, 29 women in the Tai Chi group and 31 in the control group, were enrolled for 6 months. Results: After 6 months of Tai Chi exercise, total cholesterol (M=213 to 185), LDL-cholesterol (M=135 to 128), and their 10 yr cardiovascular disease risk (M=2.62 to 2.27) had improved significantly for the Tai Chi participants compared to the control group. Total scores for quality of life along with the sub-dimensions of health perception and mental functioning were also significantly higher in the Tai Chi participants. Conclusion: Tai Chi exercise favorably affected cardiovascular health and quality of life in post-menopausal women after 6 months. Additional rigorous studies are needed to examine long term effects on the prevention of cardiovascular disease in this population.

[Effects of Tai Chi exercise on cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life in post-menopausal women].

Background: With the increase in life expectancy of women all over the world, women are expected to spend almost 1/3rd of their life in menopause phase, usually starting in 4th to 5th decade of life.
Objective: This study was planned to look for quality of life of women during menopause in Pakistan.
Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Gynaecology and Obstetrics department of Lady Atchison Hospital, Lahore over a period of 3 months from June, 2015 to August, 2015. Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL) was distributed among 120 patients with the age range of 51-80 years presenting in Outdoor department of the institution. All the demographic details and MenQol results were analyzed. Also Odd’s ratio (OR) was calculated for these symptoms according to age groups of the patients.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 60 ± 5.8 years. The mean age of patients at time of menarche was calculated as 13.4 ± 1.80 years and the mean age at menopause was 49.10 ± 3.98 years. We found that the most common symptom of the patients in our study was low backache and the least reported symptom was drying skin. The OR was also calculated for various symptoms according to age of the patients but it was found significant only (OR:10.9; (4.467 – 26.58) for vasomotor symptoms in our study.
Conclusion: Menopausal symptoms may vary in different parts of the world. Therefore exact determination of these symptoms in our society is essential as it can help us to identify preventable factors and educate our women about their quality of life.

Quality of Life after Menopause in Pakistani Women

Purpose This study was to investigate the factors influencing quality of life and difference of quality of life in a postmenopausal group compared to premenopausal women. Method The subjects consisted of 213 women from 40 to 64 years old. The data were collected from June 1, 2003 to June 31, 2004 using structured questionnaires which included questions relating to demographic and obstetric background and 4 scales(climacteric symptoms scale, marital satisfaction scale, sex-role attitude scale, quality of life scale). Result Comparing pre- and postmenopausal women, significant statistical differences were demonstrated in climacteric symptoms and sex-role attitude. However, quality of life was not different between pre- and postmenopausal women. In premenopausal women, marital satisfaction(32.7%) and educational level(8.0%) were significant predictors to explain quality of life. Marital satisfaction(12.9%) was significant predictor to explain quality of life in postmenopausal women. Conclusion No difference of quality in life between pre- and postmenopausal women provides information for changing traditional approaches of menopause according to physiological changes as illness. In addition the study showed that it is necessary to use marital satisfaction information when developing nursing interventions to promote the quality of life.
