TL;DR: The impact on the system-level performance, i.e., efficiency, power density, etc., of industrial inverter drives and of dc-dc converter resulting from the new SiC devices is evaluated based on analytical optimization procedures and prototype systems.
Abstract: Switching devices based on wide bandgap materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) offer a significant performance improvement on the switch level (specific on resistance, etc.) compared with Si devices. Well-known examples are SiC diodes employed, for example, in inverter drives with high switching frequencies. In this paper, the impact on the system-level performance, i.e., efficiency, power density, etc., of industrial inverter drives and of dc-dc converter resulting from the new SiC devices is evaluated based on analytical optimization procedures and prototype systems. There, normally on JFETs by SiCED and normally off JFETs by SemiSouth are considered.

TL;DR: In this article, different materials have been tested to gain information on how core losses are influenced by a dc premagnetization, and the Steinmetz graph (SPG) is introduced to calculate core losses under dc bias conditions.
Abstract: The calculation of core losses in inductive components is difficult and has not yet been entirely solved. In particular, it is impossible to predict the influence of a dc premagnetization on the losses without extensive measurements. For this paper, different materials have been tested to gain information on how core losses are influenced by a premagnetization. Measurements on molypermalloy powder, silicon steel, nanocrystalline material and ferrite cores have been performed. The Steinmetz premagnetization graph (SPG) that shows the dependency of the Steinmetz parameters ( , and ) on premagnetization is introduced. This permits the calculation of core losses under dc bias conditions. Such graphs are given for different materials and different operating temperatures. In addition, a detailed description of the test system is given, as high accuracy is crucial.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new core loss model called i2GSE was proposed, which takes magnetic relaxation effects into consideration and has been verified experimentally in a power electronic system.
Abstract: In modern power electronic systems, voltages across inductors/transformers generally show rectangular shapes, as the voltage across an inductor/transformer can be positive, negative or zero. In the stage of zero applied voltage (constant flux) core losses are not necessarily zero. At the beginning of a period of constant flux, losses still occur in the material. This is due to relaxation processes. A physical explanation about magnetic relaxation is given and a new core loss modeling approach that takes such relaxation effects into consideration is introduced. The new loss model is called i2GSE and has been verified experimentally.

TL;DR: In this article, the working principles and design equations of four different isolated, bi-directional DC to DC converter topologies (a dual active bridge converter, a series resonant converter and two multiple stage topologies) were presented for a 2 kW battery charger that can be operated in a wide input and output voltage range.
Abstract: The working principles and design equations of four different isolated, bi-directional DC to DC converter topologies (a dual active bridge converter, a series resonant converter and two multiple stage topologies) for a 2 kW bi-directional battery charger that can be operated in a wide input and output voltage range are presented in this paper. The results of a detailed mathematical analysis of the converter topologies as well as digital simulation results are used to select the most efficient topology for this specific converter application, where the two-stage series resonant converter is identified to be the most promising, with up to 90% efficiency at rated power.

TL;DR: In this paper, the design of a 1 MW, 20 kHz, isolated, bidirectional 12kV to 1.2kV DC-DC converter for renewable energy applications is presented.
Abstract: The design of a 1 MW, 20 kHz, isolated, bidirectional 12kV to 1.2kV DC-DC converter for renewable energy applications is presented. The main topics addressed are: High-Voltage (HV) side switch, topology & modulation and Medium Frequency (MF) transformer. A study of the possible HV side switches, considering 4.5kV IGBTs is performed, fixing the requirements from the topology and modulation side in order to reach a highly efficient system. The studied topologies are the Dual Active Bridge (DAB) with triangular modulation and the Series Resonant Converter (SRC) with constant frequency operation. Both topologies are able to achieve Zero Current Switching (ZCS) in the HV side switches, reducing the switching losses in these devices, which contribute to a large share to the system losses. Efficiency curves are presented for different semiconductor technologies for the Low-Voltage (LV) side switch in order to study the trade-offs between the selected topologies. Three MF transformer concepts, namely core-type, shell-type and matrix transformer, are presented and compared in respect of winding arrangement, isolation mechanisms and thermal management. Power losses and volume are calculated in each case and used to compare the different transformer concepts.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

Abstract: The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been a subject of increasing importance for medium/high-power energy conversion systems. Over the past few years, significant research has been done to address the technical challenges associated with the operation and control of the MMC. In this paper, a general overview of the basics of operation of the MMC along with its control challenges are discussed, and a review of state-of-the-art control strategies and trends is presented. Finally, the applications of the MMC and their challenges are highlighted.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dual-active-bridge (DAB) isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter (IBDC) serves as the core circuit of high frequency-link (HFL) power conversion systems.
Abstract: High-frequency-link (HFL) power conversion systems (PCSs) are attracting more and more attentions in academia and industry for high power density, reduced weight, and low noise without compromising efficiency, cost, and reliability. In HFL PCSs, dual-active-bridge (DAB) isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter (IBDC) serves as the core circuit. This paper gives an overview of DAB-IBDC for HFL PCSs. First, the research necessity and development history are introduced. Second, the research subjects about basic characterization, control strategy, soft-switching solution and variant, as well as hardware design and optimization are reviewed and analyzed. On this basis, several typical application schemes of DAB-IBDC for HPL PCSs are presented in a worldwide scope. Finally, design recommendations and future trends are presented. As the core circuit of HFL PCSs, DAB-IBDC has wide prospects. The large-scale practical application of DAB-IBDC for HFL PCSs is expected with the recent advances in solid-state semiconductors, magnetic and capacitive materials, and microelectronic technologies.

TL;DR: The architecture described in this paper is a roadmap for a future automated and flexible electric power distribution system that is suitable for plug-and-play of distributed renewable energy and distributed energy storage devices.
Abstract: This paper presents an architecture for a future electric power distribution system that is suitable for plug-and-play of distributed renewable energy and distributed energy storage devices. Motivated by the success of the (information) Internet, the architecture described in this paper was proposed by the NSF FREEDM Systems Center, Raleigh, NC, as a roadmap for a future automated and flexible electric power distribution system. In the envisioned “Energy Internet,” a system that enables flexible energy sharing is proposed for consumers in a residential distribution system. The key technologies required to achieve such a vision are presented in this paper as a result of the research partnership of the FREEDM Systems Center.
