This invention describes a method for sharing of application specific objects between communication devices (e.g., mobile phone) using middleware containing a peer-to-peer engine. This engine is completely peer-to-peer based and no servers are needed in the network. Especially games are seen as a promising potential application for the invention. An application registers to the peer-to-peer (P2P) engine when it wants to share or download files. The P2P engine takes care of the file sharing and informs when a new file has been downloaded so the application can start using it and the P2P engine delivers them to the appropriate application directories. The P2P engine can use either a 2G or 3G general packet radio system (GPRS), WCDMA or Bluetooth as a transport for the file sharing and the choice of the transport is left to the user.

A peer to peer engine for object sharing in communication devices

This paper presents a realization of a multi-service P2P overlay architecture that allows for establishing SIP multimedia sessions between mobile community members with little or no need for centralized servers of any kind. The overlay architecture forms a cost efficient platform for providing innovative mobile services. As an example, this paper presents an implementation of a mobile P2PSIP VoIP service. The implementation allows a mobile phone user make voice calls using resources of the P2P overlay. The mobile phone user may freely use standard call manager and contact list in a mobile phone. The paper also presents a method for locating relay servers that are used in NAT traversal.

Mobile P2PSIP - Peer-to-Peer SIP Communication in Mobile Communities

A number of mobile online social networking (OSN) services appear in the market. Majority of mobile systems can strongly benefit from services offered by cloud. However, centralized servers and communication infrastructures may not always be available. Further their location-based services are not offered to low-end mobile devices without GPS modules.To build a system that can take advantage of cloud, and also can address these potential problems that could hinder OSN usage, we design and construct a multi-hop networking system named MoNet based on WiFi, and on top of which we design and implement WiFace, a privacy-aware geosocial networking service. For the situation without any infrastructure, we design a distributed content sharing protocol which can significantly shorten the relay path, reduce conflicts and improve data persistence and availability. A role strategy is designed to encourage users to collaborate in the network. Furthermore, a key management and an authorization mechanism are developed to prevent some attacks and protect privacy. We conduct comprehensive experiments to evaluate the performance of our mobile platform MoNet and application WiFace. The results show that MoNet is more than sufficient to support social networking, and even audio and video applications.

WiFace: a secure geosocial networking system using WiFi-based multi-hop MANET

We study the development of mobile peer-to-peer (MP2P) traffic and the usage of MP2P applications in Finland during 2005-2007. Research data consists of 1) traffic traces measured from three Finnish GSM/UMTS networks covering the Internet-bound mobile data traffic generated by 80-90% of Finnish mobile subscribers (N > 4,000,000), and 2) usage log files collected with a dedicated Symbian handset monitoring application (N = 579). In the traffic trace measurement, we notice almost zero P2P file sharing traffic for handsets, but 9-18% of unidentified traffic, part of which possibly being P2P traffic. Potentially a notable growing trend for computer-based P2P file sharing traffic is visible in GSM/UMTS networks, BitTorrent and eDonkey being the most popular protocols. In the panel study, only Fring, a client to several P2P-based communication services, has significant usage and data volume levels.

Measuring Mobile Peer-to-Peer Usage: Case Finland 2007

In this paper, we present the existing content sharing paradigms along with some advanced sharing use cases that are not feasible with the existing technologies. For satisfying these use cases, we propose a new system that allows content sharing in a totally user-centric manner, meaning that users can select the people they want to share their content with and just let the system handle all the lower level device, network bearer and content transfer technologies, which best fit each sharing occasion. The system feasibility is proved in two dimensions, firstly by a technical prototype implementation in a laboratory environment, and secondly via usability studies with non-expert users, for gathering their input and feedback on the interface and preferred interaction with such a system.

Sharing with people: a system for user-centric content sharing

This paper studies attitudes towards mobile peer-to-peer content sharing services. It presents results from a survey conducted among potential mobile peer-to-peer (P2P) content sharing services users in Finland. The paper does not try to assess technical feasibility of deployment of P2P services in mobile networks. It answers elementary questions about the willingness of mobile phone users to share content stored in their mobile phones as well as their interest in downloading content created by the content industry and other mobile phone users. Thus, it examines feasibility of providing such services. The paper also presents respondents' opinions concerning mobile P2P content sharing services. It also elaborates on example mobile content services that have chances to achieve end-user acceptance.

Understanding Attitudes Towards Mobile Peer-to-Peer Content Sharing Services

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks have altered the landscape of content distribution in the internet. P2P content sharing is getting more and more popular, especially among the young people who have grown up in the Napster era. The recent developments in mobile technology have also opened room for deployment of novel P2P content sharing services in mobile networks. In this paper, we propose a new architecture of a Mobile Peer-to-Peer (MP2P) resource sharing system. The system transports P2P control traffic in Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages. It can be implemented in the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), making it interoperable and compliant with modern third generation cellular networks. In order to verify the proposed architecture, we implemented a MP2P content sharing system. The results of the conducted trial are encouraging.

Content sharing in mobile P2P networks: myth or reality?

The demo presents a novel architecture of Mobile Peer-to-Peer (MP2P) content sharing services in cellular networks. The proposed solution is based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) that is part of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in third-generation cellular networks. The concept has been implemented in C++ on the Symbian Series 60 platform. The conducted trial showed the feasibility of proposed approach and opens new room for development of scalable services in the mobile environment.

Mobile peer-to-peer content sharing application

This paper presents the architecture and the signaling flows of a multi-service overlay network implemented over the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The overlay network uses the concept of SIP-based Peer-to-peer (P2P) for providing resource sharing services, such as photograph exchange, allowing the distribution of resources across an overlay network formed for that purpose. The SIP P2P overlay network forms a cost efficient platform for providing innovative mobile services. Using the presented platform, fixed and mobile operators can provide valuable services utilizing the strengths of the IMS such as sophisticated charging, control, security and authentication mechanisms.

Resource Sharing and Discovery on Top of IMS

of the Licentiate's Thesis In my Master's Thesis, we presented how a mobile peer-to-peer file-sharing application can be implemented using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as the underlying signaling protocol. The main objective of this thesis is to evaluate what kind of special requirements mobile environment poses for peer-to-peer application design, and present how peer-to-peer based services can be efficiently realized in next-generation mobile networks by using SIP with some enhancements as the peer-to-peer signaling protocol. This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, we present different peer-to-peer architectures and search algorithms, and evaluate their suitability for mobile use. We also review some mobile peer-to-peer middleware and file-sharing applications. Then, in the second part, we present our hybrid mobile peer-to-peer architecture consisting of a Symbian based mobile client and a SIP Application Server based super-peer. Key findings of this thesis are that the mobile peer-to-peer application based on SIP signaling and hybrid peer-to-peer architecture is suitable for mobile use as it minimizes overhead in mobile nodes and allows mobile operator to have control on its users in multi-operator environment.
