TL;DR: A sequential tightening algorithm is used to update the boundary limits of each parameter based on the solution obtained in each iteration, thus tightening the convex hulls and leading to solutions near to global optimum.
Abstract: A novel convexified linear program for optimal directional overcurrent relay (DOCR) coordination problem (CP) is proposed in this letter. The DOCR CP is a highly constrained nonlinear nonconvex problem which was solved using various traditional and heuristic optimization techniques in the past. In this letter, the CP is formulated as a linear programming problem without fixing the current pickup settings of DOCRs. The bilinear terms in the proposed formulation are written in the form of linear inequalities using McCormick envelopes. A sequential tightening algorithm is used to update the boundary limits of each parameter based on the solution obtained in each iteration, thus tightening the convex hulls and leading to solutions near to global optimum. The performance of the proposed method is applied to various test systems among which the results of three bus test system are presented.

TL;DR: An optimisation enabled wide area damping control (WADC) for DFIG to mitigate both local and inter area oscillations and compensate for the delayed and time stamped error signals.
Abstract: Several studies have reported the improvement of system stability with a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines. Due to the remote location of DFIG, the local signals measured may not contain the complete oscillation information of the power system. This study describes an optimisation enabled wide area damping control (WADC) for DFIG to mitigate both local and inter area oscillations. Wide area measurement systems (WAMSs) which include phasor measurement units and synchrophasors are used for a centralised controller for damping inter-area and local oscillatory modes. The proposed damping controller parameters are optimised along with the local power system stabiliser settings for maximising the impact on system modal damping. The challenging shortcoming of WAMS based controller is the variable communication latency which can adversely affect the controller if not accounted in the controller design process. The proposed WADC algorithm addresses this issue and compensates for the delayed and time stamped error signals. The variable latencies are normalised in the optimisation algorithm in the design of controller parameters. The proposed algorithm is verified with transient simulation in PSCAD/EMTDC for the most severe three-phase faults. A set of comprehensive case studies are performed to analyse the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for the noisy, delayed communication signals.

TL;DR: Support Vector Machine (SVM), a recently introduced machine learning tool, is proposed to be used in the classifier design stage of PR system, giving high classification accuracy and less misclassification rate.
Abstract: Static security analysis is an important study carried out in the control centers of electric utilities. Static security assessment (SSA) is the process of determining whether the current operational state is in a secure or emergency (insecure) state. Conventional method of security evaluation involves performing continuous load flow analysis, which is highly time consuming and infeasible for real-time applications. This led to the application of pattern recognition (PR) approach for static security analysis. This paper presents a more efficient design of a PR system suitable for on-line SSA. The feature selection stage in the PR system uses many algorithms to select the optimal feature set. This paper proposes the use of Support Vector Machine (SVM), a recently introduced machine learning tool, in the classifier design stage of PR system. The developed PR system is implemented in IEEE standard test systems for SSA and classification. The performance of SVM classifier is compared with the conventional K-nearest neighbor, method of least squares and neural network classifiers. Simulation results prove that the SVM-PR classifier outperforms other equivalent classifier algorithms, giving high classification accuracy and less misclassification rate. The feasibility of SVM-PR classifier for on-line security assessment process is also presented.

TL;DR: A least square approximation scheme for accurate frequency estimation is proposed, and it has been proved that the range of frequency with zero estimation error increases with the increase in number of re-samplings.
Abstract: This paper presents a measurement technique suited for real-time transfer, monitoring and processing of state variables in power distribution networks, in terms of synchronized phasors. The proposed technique, different from commercial phasor measurement units (PMUs), is based on general purpose data acquisition hardware and uses network time protocol (NTP) for accurate time-stamping of the measurements. A least square approximation scheme for accurate frequency estimation is proposed, and with this scheme, it has been proved that the range of frequency with zero estimation error increases with the increase in number of re-samplings.

Abstract: This paper describes a new approach to online forecasting of power production from PV systems. The method is suited to online forecasting in many applications and in this paper it is used to predict hourly values of solar power for horizons of up to 36 h. The data used is 15-min observations of solar power from 21 PV systems located on rooftops in a small village in Denmark. The suggested method is a two-stage method where first a statistical normalization of the solar power is obtained using a clear sky model. The clear sky model is found using statistical smoothing techniques. Then forecasts of the normalized solar power are calculated using adaptive linear time series models. Both autoregressive (AR) and AR with exogenous input (ARX) models are evaluated, where the latter takes numerical weather predictions (NWPs) as input. The results indicate that for forecasts up to 2 h ahead the most important input is the available observations of solar power, while for longer horizons NWPs are the most important input. A root mean square error improvement of around 35% is achieved by the ARX model compared to a proposed reference model.

Abstract: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a biologically inspired computational search and optimization method developed in 1995 by Eberhart and Kennedy based on the social behaviors of birds flocking or fish schooling. A number of basic variations have been developed due to improve speed of convergence and quality of solution found by the PSO. On the other hand, basic PSO is more appropriate to process static, simple optimization problem. Modification PSO is developed for solving the basic PSO problem. The observation and review 46 related studies in the period between 2002 and 2010 focusing on function of PSO, advantages and disadvantages of PSO, the basic variant of PSO, Modification of PSO and applications that have implemented using PSO. The application can show which one the modified or variant PSO that haven’t been made and which one the modified or variant PSO that will be developed.

Abstract: Phasor measurement units (PMUs) are rapidly being deployed in electric power networks across the globe. Wide-area measurement system (WAMS), which builds upon PMUs and fast communication links, is consequently emerging as an advanced monitoring and control infrastructure. Rapid adaptation of such devices and technologies has led the researchers to investigate multitude of challenges and pursue opportunities in synchrophasor measurement technology, PMU structural design, PMU placement, miscellaneous applications of PMU from local perspectives, and various WAMS functionalities from the system perspective.
