TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of core geometry on vibration and acoustic response characteristics of sandwich panels which are used as aerospace structures is studied. And the results show that for a honeycomb core sandwich panel, the better acoustic comfort can be achieved by reducing the core height and increasing the face sheet thickness.

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of core geometry on sound transmission characteristics of sandwich panels has been explored and it is observed that, for a honeycomb core sandwich panel, one can select cell size as the parameter to reduce the weight with out affecting the sound transmission loss.
Abstract: Sandwich panel which has a design involving acoustic comfort is always denser and larger in size than the design involving mechanical strength. The respective short come can be solved by exploring the impact of core geometry on sound transmission characteristics of sandwich panels. In this aspect, the present work focuses on the study of influence of core geometry on sound transmission characteristics of sandwich panels which are commonly used as aircraft structures. Numerical investigation has been carried out based on a 2D model with equivalent elastic properties. The present study has found that, for a honeycomb core sandwich panel in due consideration to space constraint, better sound transmission characteristics can be achieved with lower core height. It is observed that, for a honeycomb core sandwich panel, one can select cell size as the parameter to reduce the weight with out affecting the sound transmission loss. Triangular core sandwich panel can be used for low frequency application due to its ...

TL;DR: A review of modern trends in theoretical developments, novel designs and modern applications of sandwich structures can be found in this paper, where the most recent literature published at the time of writing this review is considered, older sources are listed only on as-needed basis.
Abstract: The review outlines modern trends in theoretical developments, novel designs and modern applications of sandwich structures. The most recent work published at the time of writing of this review is considered, older sources are listed only on as-needed basis. The review begins with the discussion on the analytical models and methods of analysis of sandwich structures as well as representative problems utilizing or comparing these models. Novel designs of sandwich structures is further elucidated concentrating on miscellaneous cores, introduction of nanotubes and smart materials in the elements of a sandwich structure as well as using functionally graded designs. Examples of problems experienced by developers and designers of sandwich structures, including typical damage, response under miscellaneous loads, environmental effects and fire are considered. Sample applications of sandwich structures included in the review concentrate on aerospace, civil and marine engineering, electronics and biomedical areas. Finally, the authors suggest a list of areas where they envision a pressing need in further research.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an overview of manufacturing methods for FGMs, thus describing the fundamental difficulties and strengths of these methods based on the available literature over 30 years and give a comprehensive summary of the various applications and the future trends for research required for the design and production of these materials properly with a smooth graded.
Abstract: Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are a broad research area and attract considerable tremendous attention today in the materials science and engineering society. In recent years, FGMs have experienced remarkable developments in manufacturing methods. FGMs can be produced using several well-known processing techniques from conventional to advanced. This research provides an overview of manufacturing methods for FGMs, thus describing the fundamental difficulties and strengths of these methods based on the available literature over 30 years. Besides, this critical review gives a comprehensive summary of the various applications and the future trends for research required for the design and production of these materials properly with a smooth graded. The anticipated findings of the current paper can be considered as a milestone for future production and analysis investigations for FGMs and are beneficial for researchers, designers, and manufacturers in this scope.
