Basics of qualitative research: Grounded theory procedures and techniques

This article examines the function of documents as a data source in qualitative research and discusses document analysis procedure in the context of actual research experiences. Targeted to research novices, the article takes a nuts‐and‐bolts approach to document analysis. It describes the nature and forms of documents, outlines the advantages and limitations of document analysis, and offers specific examples of the use of documents in the research process. The application of document analysis to a grounded theory study is illustrated.

Optimal adherence to HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) is challenging, and racial/ethnic disparities in adherence rates are substantial. The most common reason persons living with HIV (PLWH) give for missed ART doses is forgetting. We took a qualitative exploratory approach to describe, from the perspectives of African American/Black and Hispanic/Latino PLWH, what it means to forget to take ART and factors that influence forgetting. Participants (N = 18) were purposively sampled for maximum variability and engaged in semi-structured/in-depth interviews on HIV/ART management. The analysis took a directed content analysis approach. Participants were mostly male (56%) and African American/Black (79%), between 50 and 69 years old, and had lived with HIV for an average of 21 years. Findings were organised into six inter-related themes: (1) forgetting to take ART was a shorthand description of a complex phenomenon, but rarely a simple lapse of memory; (2) 'forgetting' was means of managing negative emotions associated with HIV; (3) life events triggered mental health distress/substance use which disrupted adherence; (4) historical traumatic events (including AZT monotherapy) and recent trauma/loss contributed to forgetting; (5) patient-provider interactions could support or impede adherence; and (6) intrinsic motivation was fundamental. Implications for HIV social service and health care settings are described.

Forgetting to take HIV antiretroviral therapy: a qualitative exploration of medication adherence in the third decade of the HIV epidemic in the United States

Purpose: This paper aims to explicate one of the major findings of a research study seeking to understand how Indonesian people with diabetes learn about their disease. The one key finding discussed in this paper is how families influence the learning and self-management processes adopted by Indonesian people with diabetes.

Design/methodology/approach: A grounded theory methodology was adopted to investigate how Indonesian people with diabetes learn about their disease. Twenty-eight semi-structured interviews were undertaken with Indonesian people living with diabetes, families of people living with diabetes, healthcare professionals and other healthcare providers. Data was analysed by using constant comparative analysis during three coding stages.

Findings: The study explicated the basic social process of how people with diabetes in Indonesia learn about their disease through a generated theory "Learning, choosing, and acting: self-management of diabetes in Indonesia". This study found family engagement was integral to Indonesian people living with diabetes who were self-managing their disease. Families assisted with seeking information, providing recommendations, selecting and implementing actions, appraising implemented actions, and informing others about their experiences. By acknowledging that family is involved in this process, the healthcare professional can adequately provide health education to both the person with diabetes and their families. Involving families in health education is crucial as family can influence decision making made by people with diabetes in a proper or improper way. Thus, clinicians need to also skilfully recognise difficulties these people encounter by monitoring their self-management progress and by working closely with them and their family members.

Originality/value: This is the first study conducted in Indonesia that specifically investigates the process of how people with diabetes learn about their disease. The involvement of families in this process is a central finding of the study. Families can enhance the overall health and well-being of the person with diabetes, aid in early recognition of aberration to health status and trigger the initiation of interventions to re-establish homeostasis if they are actively engaged and supported by health professionals.

Diabetes Self-Management: What Role Does the Family Play?.

This article reports on a pilot vocational study programme for provision of antenatal services in the general practice
environment. The concurrent evaluation study assessed practice nurses’ experiences of undertaking the pilot programme, the level and applicability of the content, and the mode of delivery. General practitioners’ understanding of the role of the nurse in providing antenatal services, and the actual and potential impact of this new role on models of service delivery and care were also investigated. Women receiving care from practice nurses within this new model of service delivery and care were also of interest in this study. Findings showed that the current role of the general practice nurse in caring for pregnant women is restricted to assisting the general practitioner to complete their assessment of clients. Organizing clinical placement with a midwife was a major barrier to completing the pilot programme.

Australian rural remote registered nurses' experiences of learning to provide antenatal services in general practice: a pilot study.

Two issues were of importance to nurses in rural areas considering postgraduate studies. The first was the need for part-time study and what this entails. The second was a request that there be no research component within the postgraduate courses they identified. It is this second issue that I wish to address. I was a nonbeliever in the merit of research studies being integrated into nursing specialist programs. Following a long career in rural clinical nursing and management I have come full circle and now acknowledge the need to understand the role to base practice evidence that is generated through empirical research.

Research an exciting journey and a career statement: a means to an end, putting rurality on the nursing research agenda

[Extract] Australia has one of the world's most efficient, accessible, equitable and cost-effective health care systems through the provision of a universal health insurance scheme called Medicare. A variable taxation (1.5-2.5% of income) ensures an adequate GDP (over 8%) is expended annually. The Australian Health Care System has a complex mix of government and private health care services with all three levels of government (federal, state and local) taking various responsibilities. Doctors, both general practitioners and specialists, practice under fee-for-service with a Medicare rebate for patients/clients. Overall Medicare aims to provide all Australians, regardless of their personal circumstances, with access to health care at an affordable cost or no cost at all, while allowing for individual choice through substantial private sector involvement in delivery and financing.

In this chapter, the history of the Australian health and social care system is outlined, followed by a discussion of the national health priorities. Service providers and health care facilities are also described. The health status of Australians is outlined and a critique of the health care system is provided.
