Journal ArticleDOI
Ecological assembly rules in plant communities--approaches, patterns and prospects.
Lars Götzenberger,Francesco de Bello,Kari Anne Bråthen,John Davison,Anne Dubuis,Antoine Guisan,Jan Lepš,Jan Lepš,Regina Lindborg,Regina Lindborg,Mari Moora,Meelis Pärtel,Loïc Pellissier,Julien Pottier,Pascal Vittoz,Kristjan Zobel,Martin Zobel +16 more
TL;DR: This work redefined the traditional concept of assembly rules in a more general framework where the co‐occurrence of species is a product of chance, historical patterns of speciation and migration, dispersal, abiotic environmental factors, and biotic interactions, with none of these processes being mutually exclusive.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fifty thousand years of Arctic vegetation and megafaunal diet
Eske Willerslev,John Davison,Mari Moora,Martin Zobel,Eric Coissac,Mary E. Edwards,Eline D. Lorenzen,Eline D. Lorenzen,Mette Vestergård,Galina Gussarova,Galina Gussarova,James Haile,James Haile,Joseph M. Craine,Ludovic Gielly,Sanne Boessenkool,Sanne Boessenkool,Laura S. Epp,Laura S. Epp,Peter B. Pearman,Rachid Cheddadi,David F. Murray,Kari Anne Bråthen,Nigel G. Yoccoz,Heather Binney,Corinne Cruaud,Patrick Wincker,Tomasz Goslar,Inger Greve Alsos,Eva Bellemain,Eva Bellemain,Anne K. Brysting,Reidar Elven,Jørn Henrik Sønstebø,Julian B. Murton,Andrei Sher,Morten Rasmussen,Regin Rønn,Tobias Mourier,Alan Cooper,Jeremy J. Austin,Per Möller,Duane G. Froese,Grant D. Zazula,François Pompanon,Delphine Rioux,Vincent Niderkorn,Alexei Tikhonov,Grigoriy Savvinov,Richard G. Roberts,Ross D. E. MacPhee,M. Thomas P. Gilbert,Kurt H. Kjær,Ludovic Orlando,Christian Brochmann,Pierre Taberlet +55 more
TL;DR: The authors' analyses indicate that both graminoids and forbs would have featured in megafaunal diets, and question the predominance of a Late Quaternary graminoid-dominated Arctic mammoth steppe.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem feedbacks and cascade processes: understanding their role in the responses of Arctic and alpine ecosystems to environmental change
Philip A. Wookey,Rien Aerts,Richard D. Bardgett,Florence Baptist,Kari Anne Bråthen,Johannes H. C. Cornelissen,Laura Gough,Iain P. Hartley,David Hopkins,David Hopkins,Sandra Lavorel,Gaius R. Shaver +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of changes in species distributions and dominances on key ecosystem processes and properties are considered, based upon best estimates of the trajectories of key transformations, their magnitude and rates of change.
Journal ArticleDOI
New environmental metabarcodes for analysing soil DNA: potential for studying past and present ecosystems.
Laura S. Epp,Sanne Boessenkool,Eva Bellemain,James Haile,James Haile,Alfonso Esposito,Tiayyba Riaz,Christer Erséus,Vladimir I. Gusarov,Mary E. Edwards,Arild Johnsen,Hans K. Stenøien,Kristian Hassel,Håvard Kauserud,Nigel G. Yoccoz,Kari Anne Bråthen,Eske Willerslev,Pierre Taberlet,Eric Coissac,Christian Brochmann +19 more
TL;DR: Large variation in the level of detection among the groups and between modern and ancient samples is found, and the in silico approach offered a reliable estimate of the suitability of a marker.
Journal ArticleDOI
DNA from soil mirrors plant taxonomic and growth form diversity
Nigel G. Yoccoz,Kari Anne Bråthen,Ludovic Gielly,James Haile,James Haile,Mary E. Edwards,Tomasz Goslar,H. Von Stedingk,Anne K. Brysting,Eric Coissac,François Pompanon,Jørn Henrik Sønstebø,Christian Miquel,Alice Valentini,F. de Bello,F. de Bello,Jérôme Chave,Wilfried Thuiller,Patrick Wincker,Corinne Cruaud,F. Gavory,Morten Rasmussen,M. T. P. Gilbert,Ludovic Orlando,Christian Brochmann,Eske Willerslev,Pierre Taberlet +26 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a very short (usually <100 base pairs) but informative DNA fragment was extracted from dead material in soil to assess biodiversity in different biomes, including boreal soil.
