Shift work, and particularly permanent night shifts, promote dyslipidaemia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with Burnout Syndrome (BS) in Primary Health Care (PHC) nursing professionals from the state of Bahia, Brazil. A multicentre, cross-sectional population-based study was conducted in a cluster sample among 1125 PHC Nursing professionals during the years 2017 and 2018. We used a questionnaire that included sociodemographic, labor and lifestyle variables and the Maslach Burnout Inventory scale to identify BS. The associations were evaluated using a robust Poisson regression with the hierarchical selection of the independent variables. The prevalence of BS was 18.3% and the associated factors were ethnicity (prevalence ratio (PR) = 0.62, confidence interval (CI) 95% = 0.47-0.83), residence (PR = 2.35, CI 95% = 1.79-3.09), economic situation (PR = 1.40, CI 95% = 1.06-1.86), satisfaction with current occupation (PR = 1.75, CI 95% = 1.31-2.33), (PR = 1.60, CI 95% = 1.23-2.08), rest (PR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.41-2.37), technical resources and equipment (PR = 1.37, CI 95% = 1.06-1.77), night shift (PR = 1.49, CI 95% = 1.14-1.96), physical activity practice (PR = 1.72; CI 95% = 1.28-2.31), smoking (PR = 1.82, CI 95% = 1.35-2.45), and satisfaction with physical form (PR = 1.34, CI 95% = 1.01-179). Strategies are needed to prevent BS, with an emphasis on implementing worker health programs in the context of PHC.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Burnout Syndrome among Primary Health Care Nursing Professionals: A Cross-Sectional Study.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this review was to determine the effect of nurse staffing on patient and nurse workforce outcomes in acute care settings within low- and middle-income countries. Introduction: Health care systems in low- and middle-income countries experience a high proportion of the global burden of disease, which is aggravated by several health care constraints. The high rates of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, low numbers in the workforce, poor distribution of qualified professionals, and constraints in medical supplies and resources make the provision of quality health care challenging in low- and middle-income countries. Health care systems in low- and middle-income countries, however, are still expected to address universal health care access and provide high-quality health care. Systematic reviews examining nurse staffing and its effect on patient and nurse workforce outcomes are largely from the perspective of high-income countries. There is a need to understand the evidence on nurse staffing and its impact in the context of low- and middle-income countries. Inclusion criteria: Empirical studies that addressed acute care nurse staffing levels, such as nurse-to-patient ratio or nurses’ qualifications, experience, and skill mix, and their influence on patient and nurse workforce outcomes were included in the review. Studies conducted in a low- or middle-income country were included. Outcomes must have been measured objectively using validated tools. Methods: Studies published until July 2019 were identified from CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. The JBI approach to critical appraisal, study selection, data extraction, and data synthesis was used for this review. Narrative synthesis was conducted due to high heterogeneity of included studies. The level of evidence was determined using GRADEpro. Results: Twenty-seven studies were included in this review and the level of evidence was low, mainly due to the design of included studies. Low nurse-to-patient ratio or high nurse workload was associated with higher rates of in-hospital mortality, hospital-acquired infection, medication errors, falls, and abandonment of treatment. Findings on the effect of nurse staffing on length of hospital stay and incidence of pressure ulcers were inconsistent. Extended work hours, less experience, and working night or weekend shifts all significantly increased medication errors. Higher nurse workload was linked to higher levels of nurses’ burnout, needlestick and sharps injuries, intent to leave, and absenteeism. Conclusions: Lower nurse-to-patient ratios and higher nurse workload are linked to in-hospital mortality, hospital-acquired infections, and medication errors among patients, and high levels of burnout, needlestick and sharps injuries, absenteeism, and intention to leave their job among nurses in low- and middle-income countries. The results of this review show similarities with the evidence from high-income countries regarding poor outcomes for patients and nurses. These findings should be considered in light of the lower nurse-to-patient ratios in most low- and middle-income countries. Systematic review registration number: PROSPERO CRD42018119428

The impact of nurse staffing on patient and nurse workforce outcomes in acute care settings in low and middle-income countries: A quantitative systematic review

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an important public health problem, and unhealthy dietary habits and shift work are considered major factors that increase the prevalence of MetS. The purpose of this study was to examine whether dietary habits, alcohol drinking, and shift-working were associated with development of MetS in shift-working female nurses. This study analyzed cross-sectional survey data from the Korea Nurses' Health Study (KNHS). Of the 1638 nurses, 403 participants were selected based on the propensity score matching method (PSM). These participants had either no or more than three MetS determinant factors. Analysis was conducted by using multivariable logistic regression to confirm the factors influencing MetS. The prevalence of MetS in this group (1638 participants) was 5.6% (92 participants). Consumption of over 50% of daily calorie intake after 7 p.m., consumption of carbonated drinks, family history of diabetes, and non-shift work were significant factors influencing MetS. Nurses are one of the at-risk groups for unhealthy dietary habits due to the nature of their work. Therefore, nurse managers should include regular dietary education for nurses and continue their policy efforts to resolve health problems that may arise in connection with nurses' work.

Association between Dietary Habits, Shift Work, and the Metabolic Syndrome: The Korea Nurses' Health Study.

Background There is a growing recognition that medical staff members are exposed to job and life stressors that increase the risk of burnout. This study aimed to investigate the potential stressors among medical staff members working at a Cancer Center in Beijing and to explore the demographic, occupational, and societal features associated with burnout. Methods This was a cross-sectional study. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) survey was distributed to all medical staff members, along with an anonymous questionnaire to collect general information about demographic, occupational, and societal characteristics. The data were analyzed using T test, ANOVA, and multivariable linear regression. Results A total of 1096 of 1208 (91%) medical staff members completed the questionnaires, including 285 (26%) doctors and 572 (52%) nurses. The scores for emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA) were 14.51 ± 9.78, 5.78 ± 5.59, and 35.07 ± 10.43, respectively. Domicile, being a nurse, working overtime, and low self-rated QoL were predictors of EE; Domicile, being a researcher, low self-rated health, low self-rated QoL, and bad colleague relationships were predictors of DP; Age, being a doctor or a nurse, low self-rated health, and low self-rated interpersonal relationships were predictors of low PA. Conclusion Compared with the other occupations, doctors and nurses are more likely to experience burnout. Additionally, cultivating a better work environment, promoting the health and quality of life of staff, and improving rapport with colleagues may help to prevent burnout.

Demographic, occupational, and societal features associated with burnout among medical oncology staff members: Cross-sectional results of a Cancer Center in Beijing, China.

Nurses are at risk of having burnout due to workload and job stress-studies have reported that chronic stress is associated with metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to assess the association between burnout and metabolic syndrome in a sample of female nurses. Data were collected from a cross-sectional study from 2016 to 2018 in a tertiary hospital in Mexico City. All nurses that work in the hospital were invited to participate. Information pertaining to sociodemographic (age, education level), work (labor seniority, service area, shift work), anthropometric (weight, waist circumference, blood pressure) and biochemical (glucose, serum lipids) variables were collected. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory test, and metabolic syndrome was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. A total of 168 nurses participated with a median age of 44 years. The prevalence of burnout and metabolic syndrome was 19.6% and 38.7%, respectively. There was no association between burnout and metabolic syndrome (p = 0.373). However, associations of emotional exhaustion (aOR: 14.95; 95% CI: 1.5-148.7), personal accomplishment (aOR: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.01-0.99), and night shift (aOR: 12.39; 95% CI: 1.02-150.5) with increased waist circumference were found. Strategies are needed to prevent burnout and metabolic syndrome in nurses, especially in those who work at night shift.

Burnout and Metabolic Syndrome in Female Nurses: An Observational Study.

University students, as young adults, are at risk for Body Dissatisfaction (BD) and Distorted Body Image (DBI), which are related to Disordered Eating Behaviors (DEBs). This study aimed to assess changes in the prevalence of these three conditions over six years; and the associations between them. Data was collected through an annual online survey from 2017 to 2022 at a private university in Mexico City. Students between 18–30 years old were invited to participate. Body image-related variables were assessed by the Stunkard’s Silhouettes and Body Mass Index, by self-reported height and weight. Disordered Eating Behaviors were measured by the Brief Disordered Eating Behaviors Questionnaire. A median of 250 students participated per year, with a median age of 21 years old. The prevalence was 63.5–71.7% for BD, 40.4–49.1% for DBI, and 25–38.3% for DEBs. DEBs and BD showed associations during the whole period (OR from 3.6 to 15.9, p ≤ 0.001); as well as DBI with DEBs (OR from 1.9 to 3.3, p < 0.05). Alterations in Body Image and eating behaviors are common conditions, mainly in women and in the young population. Therefore, it is important to promote screening for these conditions, as they usually remain undiagnosed, their prevalence is increasing worldwide, and their impact on physical and mental health has already been acknowledged.

Body Dissatisfaction, Distorted Body Image and Disordered Eating Behaviors in University Students: An Analysis from 2017–2022

OBJECTIVE
Latin America had only one Spanish-speaking postgraduate academic programme on managing wounds and ostomies until 2021. Since then, two more programmes have been developed; one in Colombia and another in Mexico. Therefore, studying alumni outcomes becomes highly relevant. We aimed to describe the alumni's professional development and academic satisfaction from a Wound, Ostomy and Burn Therapy postgraduate programme in Mexico City, Mexico.


METHOD
An electronic survey was sent to all alumni from January-July 2019 from the School of Nursing of Universidad Panamericana. Employability, academic development and satisfaction following completion of the academic programme were evaluated.


RESULTS
From 88 respondents, 77 of whom were nurses, 86 (97.7%) answered that they were working, and 86.4% were working in an area related to the studied programme. Regarding general satisfaction, 88% were totally satisfied/satisfied with the programme and 93.2% would recommend it.


CONCLUSION
Alumni from the Wound, Ostomy and Burn Therapy postgraduate programme are satisfied with the academic curriculum and have good professional development, demonstrated by a high employment rate.
