An infrageneric classification of Syzygium based upon evolutionary relationships as inferred from analyses of nuclear and plastid DNA sequence data, and supported by morphological evidence, is presented. Six subgenera and seven sections are recognised. An identification key is provided and names proposed for two species newly transferred to Syzygium.

An infrageneric classification of Syzygium (Myrtaceae)

A revision is made of the genera Hypnodendron and Braithwaitea. Mniodendron and Sciadocladus are reduced to Hypnodendron, Limbella is excluded from the Hypnodendraceae, and Dendro-Hypnum is considered to be not validly published. Hypnodendron rigidum Mitt. is transferred to Pterobryella. The species of Hypnodendron are grouped into nine sections. Five of these are monotypic, viz. Leiocarpos Dix. and four new ones: Lindbergiodendron (including H. arcuatum), Tristichophyllum (H. diversifolium), Mniodendropsis (H. milnei), and Pseudomniodendron (H. fusco-mucronatum). The circumscription of the family also needs revision, but has been maintained unchanged for the time being in the absence of information regarding assumedly related families.
A number of morphological and other characters are discussed. Hypnodendron is thought to be of pleurocarpous descent; Meusel’s derivation of the growth-form of Hypnodendron from that of the acrocarpous genera Mnium and Philonotis is rejected. Rejuvenation takes place by means of basal innovations, and in a number of erect species also by distal ones. The umbellate and palmate fronds are assumed to have been derived from a pinnate type. The Hypnodendraceae are distributed in the Indo-Pacific and Australasian regions and in southern South America. Hypnodendron is centred in Melanesia and New Zealand. 26 species are recognized, 9 of which are divided into subspecies or varieties; 5 taxa are reinstated (H. colensoi, H. comatum, H. comosum var. sieberi, H. spininervium ssp. spininervium and ssp. archeri) and 1 is described as new (H. vitiense ssp. australe). Identification keys are provided, and for each taxon are given: synonymy together with pertinent literature and typification, misinterpretations and misidentifications, description, geographical distribution, ecology, and notes on various subjects. Each species is illustrated, and a list is given of specimens examined, mostly accompanied by a distribution map.

Revision of the genus Pueraria DC. with some notes on Teyleria Backer (Leguminosae)

This revision is a monographic treatment of the fern genus Microsorum (Polypodiaceae). To elucidate the problematic generic delimitation and systematic position of this genus an additional selection of 26 possibly related species was also studied. Most of these related species are traditionally placed in Colysis, Leptochilus, Neocheiropteris, Paraleptochilus, Phymatosorus (‘Phymatodes’), and Podosorus. In order to produce a natural classification an attempt is made to recognize monophyletic groups of species through cladistic analysis. The methods and underlying theories which have been employed are made explicit as much as possible. A suitable selection of intrinsic characters is used for analysis with the computer programs CAFCA, PAUP and HENNIG86. The resulting cladograms are very inconsistent with the datamatrix. They need many ad hoc hypotheses, such as homoplasies, to explain the pattern of distribution of character states among the species. Even when the number of species to be analysed is artificially reduced by using representative species of inferred monophyletic subgroups of Microsorum, the resulting cladograms are to be rejected because of their low consistency indices. The conclusion is reached that the evolution of the microsoroids has resulted in a complex pattern, which cannot be understood sufficiently with the present set of data and available methods. Additional analyses of other characters and species, microsoroids as well as other Polypodiaceae, field observations, cytological and isozyme studies are needed. The results presented here form a good basis for the selection of problematic or promising groups of species. In the absence of an acceptable hypothesis concerning the genealogical relationships among the microsoroids, a temporary formal classification is constructed. Because of this temporary nature of the classification, stability of nomenclature, and recognizability of the taxa, have in this treatment priority over a maximum of phylogenetic information. Thus the classification may contain para- and polyphyletic groups. This results in the recognition of Microsorum in a restricted sense, comprising 20 species (including Dendroconche and Diblemma) and of five other microsoroid genera: Colysis (including Paraleptochilus), Leptochilus (emended), Neocheiropteris, Phymatosorus, and Podosorus. Two species of Microsorum are newly described, namely M. cinctum and M. sopuense, and two newly transferred. Nine species, initially thought to belong to Microsorum, are fully described and included in the key, but are finally classified under one of the other microsoroid genera, resulting in seven new combinations and one new species ( Phymatosorus biseriatus). Many other species of Microsorum (84 names) are excluded but, because of the temporary character of this classification, the formal new combinations, necessary for most of these 84 names, are not formally made.

Phylogenetic relationships and new tribal delimitations in subfamily Ixoroideae (Rubiaceae).

SINCE the acquisition of Kaiser Wilhelmsland and the neighbouring islands, German explorers and botanists have been busy working out the flora of their new possessions; and now, some seventeen years from the date of annexation, all available information is made accessible in the imposing volume under review. The immediate cause of the issue of this Flora is that the series of extensive collections that have recently come to hand necessitated a considerable volume for their adequate description. This, and the fact that the literature on the flora is much scattered, has prompted the authors to expand their undertaking so as to include the results of earlier explorations. The area dealt with includes, be sides Kaiser Wilhelmsland (German New Guinea), the adjacent Bismarck Archipelago, the more westerly of the Solomon Islands, the Marshall, Caroline and Marianne Islands. In all over 2200 species are enumerated, and of these 400 are described for the first time, or have become known only from the recent collections which have led to the publication of this Flora. The species are distributed as follows:—Algæ, 222; Fungi and Lichens, 226; Bryophytes, 200; Pteridophytes, 155; Gymnosperms, 12; Monocotyledons, 392; Dicotyledons, 1000. The new forms are all fully described, whilst both for these and for all the plants enumerated, admirably full localities are given. Many of the new forms are of considerable interest, and fourteen new genera are created. There is a new species of Cycas occurring in the Bismarck Gebirge up to a height of 3000 ft., in habit resembling an Australian Xanthorrhæa; Guppy's interesting Sararanga (Pandanaceæ) is recorded with an extended distribution; there is a small Palm, Dammera, allied to Licuala; whilst among Dicotyledons, Ficus arbuscula, a fig-tree 3 to 6 feet high, may be mentioned. The new Hibiscus papuanus is spoken of as possessing the most strikingly beautiful flowers in the whole region. The additions to Rubiaceæ are considerable, and include Dolicholobium Gertrudis with curious dimorphic flowers. A second species of Bothryocline (Compositæ) consider ably extends the distribution of a genus previously restricted to Africa.
