TL;DR: This paper presents a maximum power point tracking approach for a photovoltaic system using the dividing rectangles algorithm, which is capable of searching for global maximum and possesses a fast tracking speed.
Abstract: This paper presents a maximum power point tracking approach for a photovoltaic system using the dividing rectangles algorithm. The new approach overcomes some weaknesses of the existing methods such as the perturb and observe method as it is capable of searching for global maximum. This is particularly important for a system that is partially shaded. To validate the performance of the proposed scheme, experimental studies have been conducted. The results have shown that the proposed approach is robust and possesses a fast tracking speed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new approach using particle swarm optimization (PSO) with inverse barrier constraint is proposed to determine the unknown PV model parameters, which has been validated with three different PV technologies and the results show that the maximum mean modeling error at maximum power point is less than 0.02% for Pmp and 0.3% for Vmp.
Abstract: The photovoltaic (PV) model is used in simulation studies to validate system design such as the maximum power point tracking algorithm and microgrid system. It is often difficult to simulate a PV module characteristic under different environmental conditions due to the limited information provided by the manufacturers. In this paper, a new approach using particle swarm optimization (PSO) with inverse barrier constraint is proposed to determine the unknown PV model parameters. The proposed method has been validated with three different PV technologies and the results show that the maximum mean modeling error at maximum power point is less than 0.02% for Pmp and 0.3% for Vmp.

Abstract: Deployment of large population of sensors for sophisticated sensing and control in the industrial and commercial infrastructures is a challenging research area. The use of wireless sensor network (WSN) for industrial applications has attracted a great deal of interests today. Unlike the office networks, the industrial environment for wireless sensor networks are harsher due to the unpredictable variations in temperature, pressure, humidity, present of heavy equipments etc. In this paper, we present a survey of wireless sensor network for industrial applications. The interference and other issues that could be encountered in WSN are discussed and strategies to improve the link quality are described

TL;DR: In this article, a zero-phase odd-harmonic repetitive control scheme is proposed for pulse-width modulation inverters, which combines an oddharmonic periodic generator with a non-casual zero phase compensation filter, and yields very low total harmonics distortion (THD) and low tracking error.
Abstract: In this paper, a zero-phase odd-harmonic repetitive control scheme is proposed for pulse-width modulation inverters. The proposed repetitive controller combines an odd-harmonic periodic generator with a noncasual zero-phase compensation filter. It occupies less data memory than a conventional repetitive controller does. Moreover, it offers faster convergence of the tracking error, and yields very low total harmonics distortion (THD) and low tracking error. Analysis and design of the proposed system are presented. Experimental results with the proposed repetitive controller are presented to validate the approach. The phenomena of even-harmonic residues in the proposed control system is discussed and experimentally demonstrated.

TL;DR: Time-domain UWB channel measurements are presented to characterize the body-centric multipath channel and to facilitate the diversity analysis in a cooperative BAN (CoBAN), and an intuitive measure is proposed to quantify the diversity gains in a single-hop cooperative network.
Abstract: In this paper, we explore the application of cooperative communications in ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless body area networks (BANs), where a group of on-body devices may collaborate together to communicate with other groups of on-body equipment. Firstly, time-domain UWB channel measurements are presented to characterize the body-centric multipath channel and to facilitate the diversity analysis in a cooperative BAN (CoBAN). We focus on the system deployment scenario when the human subject is in the sitting posture. Important channel parameters such as the pathloss, power variation, power delay profile (PDP), and effective received power (ERP) crosscorrelation are investigated and statistically analyzed. Provided with the model preliminaries, a detailed analysis on the diversity level in a CoBAN is provided. Specifically, an intuitive measure is proposed to quantify the diversity gains in a single-hop cooperative network, which is defined as the number of independent multipaths that can be averaged over to detect symbols. As this measure provides the largest number of redundant copies of transmitted information through the body-centric channel, it can be used as a benchmark to access the performance bound of various diversity-based cooperative schemes in futuristic body sensor systems.

TL;DR: The major issues and challenges in microgrid control are discussed, and a review of state-of-the-art control strategies and trends is presented; a general overview of the main control principles (e.g., droop control, model predictive control, multi-agent systems).
Abstract: The increasing interest in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources into microgrids presents major challenges from the viewpoints of reliable operation and control. In this paper, the major issues and challenges in microgrid control are discussed, and a review of state-of-the-art control strategies and trends is presented; a general overview of the main control principles (e.g., droop control, model predictive control, multi-agent systems) is also included. The paper classifies microgrid control strategies into three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary, where primary and secondary levels are associated with the operation of the microgrid itself, and tertiary level pertains to the coordinated operation of the microgrid and the host grid. Each control level is discussed in detail in view of the relevant existing technical literature.

TL;DR: The aim is to provide a contemporary look at the current state of the art in IWSNs and discuss the still-open research issues in this field and to make the decision-making process more effective and direct.
Abstract: In today's competitive industry marketplace, the companies face growing demands to improve process efficiencies, comply with environmental regulations, and meet corporate financial objectives. Given the increasing age of many industrial systems and the dynamic industrial manufacturing market, intelligent and low-cost industrial automation systems are required to improve the productivity and efficiency of such systems. The collaborative nature of industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSNs) brings several advantages over traditional wired industrial monitoring and control systems, including self-organization, rapid deployment, flexibility, and inherent intelligent-processing capability. In this regard, IWSN plays a vital role in creating a highly reliable and self-healing industrial system that rapidly responds to real-time events with appropriate actions. In this paper, first, technical challenges and design principles are introduced in terms of hardware development, system architectures and protocols, and software development. Specifically, radio technologies, energy-harvesting techniques, and cross-layer design for IWSNs have been discussed. In addition, IWSN standards are presented for the system owners, who plan to utilize new IWSN technologies for industrial automation applications. In this paper, our aim is to provide a contemporary look at the current state of the art in IWSNs and discuss the still-open research issues in this field and, hence, to make the decision-making process more effective and direct.

TL;DR: The current state-of-art of WBANs is surveyed based on the latest standards and publications, and open issues and challenges within each area are explored as a source of inspiration towards future developments inWBANs.
Abstract: Recent developments and technological advancements in wireless communication, MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) technology and integrated circuits has enabled low-power, intelligent, miniaturized, invasive/non-invasive micro and nano-technology sensor nodes strategically placed in or around the human body to be used in various applications, such as personal health monitoring. This exciting new area of research is called Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) and leverages the emerging IEEE 802.15.6 and IEEE 802.15.4j standards, specifically standardized for medical WBANs. The aim of WBANs is to simplify and improve speed, accuracy, and reliability of communication of sensors/actuators within, on, and in the immediate proximity of a human body. The vast scope of challenges associated with WBANs has led to numerous publications. In this paper, we survey the current state-of-art of WBANs based on the latest standards and publications. Open issues and challenges within each area are also explored as a source of inspiration towards future developments in WBANs.
