Journal ArticleDOI
A quantitative magnetic resonance imaging study of changes in brain morphology from infancy to late adulthood.
Adolf Pfefferbaum,Daniel H. Mathalon,Edith V. Sullivan,Jody M. Rawles,Robert B. Zipursky,Kelvin O. Lim +5 more
TL;DR: These patterns of growth and change seen in vivo with MRI are largely consistent with neuropathological studies, as well as animal models of development, and may reflect neuronal progressive and regressive processes, including cell growth, myelination, cell death, and atrophy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain Gray and White Matter Volume Loss Accelerates with Aging in Chronic Alcoholics: A Quantitative MRI Study
Adolf Pfefferbaum,Kelvin O. Lim,Kelvin O. Lim,Robert B. Zipursky,Robert B. Zipursky,Daniel H. Mathalon,Daniel H. Mathalon,Margaret J. Rosenbloom,Margaret J. Rosenbloom,Barton Lane,Barton Lane,Chung Nim Ha,Chung Nim Ha,Edith V. Sullivan,Edith V. Sullivan +14 more
TL;DR: The increased brain tissue loss with advanced age is interpreted as evidence for age-related increase in brain vulnerability to chronic alcohol abuse.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The present study provides a robust profile of widespread WM abnormalities in schizophrenia patients worldwide, and is believed to be the first ever large-scale coordinated study of WM microstructural differences in schizophrenia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Frontal Lobe Volume Loss Observed with Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Older Chronic Alcoholics
Adolf Pfefferbaum,Edith V. Sullivan,Edith V. Sullivan,Daniel H. Mathalon,Kelvin O. Lim,Kelvin O. Lim +5 more
TL;DR: In vivo evidence is provided that the frontal lobes are especially vulnerable to chronic alcoholism in older men, and the cortical white matter volume deficit in the older alcoholics was especially severe in the prefrontal and frontal regions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Widespread cerebral gray matter volume deficits in schizophrenia.
Robert B. Zipursky,Kelvin O. Lim,Kelvin O. Lim,Edith V. Sullivan,Edith V. Sullivan,Byron W. Brown,Adolf Pfefferbaum,Adolf Pfefferbaum +7 more
TL;DR: The schizophrenic group was found to have significantly less gray matter than the control group but no difference in white matter, and regional brain volume measurements need to be expressed in the context of possible widespread gray matter volume deficits in schizophrenia.
