A laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV) study of velocity profiles in the laminar boundary layer adjacent to a heated flat plate revealed that the seed particles used for the LDV measurements were driven away from the plate surface by thermophoretic forces, causing a particle-free region within the boundary layer of approximately one half the boundary-layer thickness. Measurements of the thickness of this region were compared with particle trajectories calculated according to several theories for the thermophoretic force. It was found that the theory of Brock, with an improved value for the thermal slip coefficient, gave the best agreement with experiment for low Knudsen numbers, λ/R = O(10−1), where λ is the mean free path and R the particle radius.Data obtained by other experimenters over a wider range of Knudsen numbers are compared, and a fitting formula for the thermophoretic force useful over the entire range 0 [les ] λ/R [les ] ∞ is proposed which agrees within 20% or less with the majority of the available data.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the mathematical formulation of the problems of convective heat transfer in geothermal systems. Geothermal reservoirs may have numerous near-vertical faults and relatively impermeable intrusive interspersed in the aquifers. Both theoretical and experimental investigations of heat transfer in geothermal systems are reviewed. A qualitative understanding of the large-scale convection processes in a geothermal reservoir and the prediction of reservoir behavior under production can be obtained by idealizing it as a saturated porous medium. The identification of a viable geothermal reservoir and the estimation of its capacity remain major problems in the utilization of geothermal resources. Thermal anomalies in geothermal areas can be detected by surface manifestations, aerial infrared surveys, geochemical analyses, or exploratory drillings. Many of the analyses are applicable to a wide range of engineering problems whenever they can be idealized as convection in a porous medium. These include the problems of the secondary recovery of oil by thermal methods, the use of fibrous materials for thermal insulations, the design of aquifers as an energy storage system, and the deposition of mineral ore in the subsurface formation. Results from short-duration well testing are used to determine reservoir characteristics.

Variable-density flow and transport in porous media: approaches and challenges

The rate at which particles carried in a flowing gas are deposited on a cold surface by thermophoretic movement is studied theoretically. Some exact deductions from the coupled equations for the temperature ( T ) and particle concentration ( C ) in the moving fluid show that, in cases in which the particles come from a region in which T and C are uniform with values T 0 and C 0 , there are strong constraints on the possible values of C / C 0 at a point at which T / T 0 is known. This suggests the hypotheses that C / C 0 is approximately uniform (with value C 1 / C 0 say) over a cold isothermal boundary (at temperature T 1 ), in which event the total particle flux to the boundary is proportional to the total heat flux to the boundary, and that the relation between C 1 / C 0 and T 1 / T 0 is approximately the same for all flow systems. These hypotheses are tested against the available numerical results for a number of steady flow systems, four of them relating to cold bodies in a uniform stream of gas and two relating to flow in a circular tube downstream from a sudden drop in wall temperature, and are found to represent the exact results with adequate accuracy except when both T 1 / T 0 and the thermophoretic coefficient are small. We thus have a means of estimating the total rate of deposition on a cold isothermal boundary from a knowledge of the total heat flux to the boundary in cases in which computation of the distributions of temperature and particle concentration in the fluid is not feasible, although further tests of the hypotheses are desirable.

Thermophoretic deposition of particles in gas flowing over cold surfaces

Convection in a porous cavity driven by heating in the horizontal is analysed by a number of different techniques which yield a fairly complete description of the two-dimensional solutions. The solutions are governed by two dimensionless parameters: the Darcy-Rayleigh number R and the cavity aspect ratio A. We first find solutions valid for shallow cavities, A → 0, by using matched asymptotic expansions. These solutions are given up to O(A6R4). For A fixed, we find regular expansions in R by semi-numerical techniques, up to O(R30) in some cases. Series-improvement techniques then enable us to cover the range 0 ≤ R ≤ ∞. A limited result regarding bifurcations is noted. Finally, for R → ∞ with A fixed, we propose a self-consistent boundary-layer theory which extends previous approximate work. The results obtained by these different methods of solution are in good agreement with each other and with experiments.

Convection in a porous cavity

The deposition of small particles due to a migration velocity dependent upon temperature gradients (thermophoresis) is studied theoretically for laminar tube flow. The prototype boundary value problem is that in which the wall temperature is suddenly decreased at a given axial position. Because of the ultimate relaxation of the temperature gradient, only some fraction of the particles initially present will deposit on the walls. A Leveque solution for short distances is used to establish a scaling for the deposition efficiency. The effects of weak Brownian diffusion are treated rigorously, and limiting efficiencies for long tubes are determined numerically. Some interesting contrasts between this problem and that for aerosol deposition due solely to diffusion are discussed.
