Provides a progress report on the current project to produce a new English-language cataloguing code called Resource Description and Access that will replace Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (2nd ed.). RDA is scheduled for final publication in 2009.

RDA : Resource Description and Access

At the 2000 Annual Meeting, CC:DA was presented with a discussion paper, CC:DA/Attig/2000/1 (http://www.ala.org/alcts/organization/ccs/ccda/attig1.pdf). Section D of that paper presented some options for including provisions in AACR2 for uniform resource identifiers. CC:DA did not have enough time to discuss the paper and the options presented, and decided to continue the discussion at a later time. At the 2001 Midwinter Meeting, the topic of uniform resource identifiers and AACR2 was again raised, and CC:DA voted to form a task force to examine the issue. This task force was formed following the 2001 Midwinter Meeting and a charge was officially issued on March 8, 2001. The charge included five components:

Catalogue 2.0: The Future of the Library Catalogue

Collections of three-dimensional materials may not be discoverable to library users if they lack adequate metadata. Discovery of these collections may be enhanced through the application of relevant cataloging standards and controlled vocabularies. This paper outlines how librarians at the University of North Texas Libraries used these strategies to increase access to a large collection of tabletop games.

Enhancing the Discovery of Tabletop Games

Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) is a multidisciplinary thesaurus that provides indexing terminology to describe what works are, rather than what they are about. Traditionally, access to genres and forms of works has been provided with subject headings, which poses two problems: first, subject headings are by definition more properly restricted to the topic of a work, and second, the rules for application of subject headings often treat forms secondarily to the topic, thereby limiting access. This entry will explain the differences between subjects and genres and forms, and put LCGFT in the context of other vocabularies that provide genre/form access. The development of LCGFT is a large undertaking, and the project management will be described. The majority of the entry will elaborate on the principles upon which LCGFT is built (the choice of authorized terms and the syndetic structure) and the application of terms. Finally, the entry will outline developments in the provision of access to characteristics of works and expressions that are closely related to genre and form: musical medium of performance, intended audience, characteristics of creators and contributors, and time period of creation.

The handout consists of an example of a catalog record for a tabletop game (including genre terms), an authority record for a genre term, a reference to a list of genre terms for tabletop games, and a bibliography of works on genre terms.

Enhancing Discovery of Unique Collections: Get Ahead of the Game

ABSTRACT Content analysis of job advertisements provide a wealth of useful information related to job responsibilities and requirements. However, more recent information is needed to reflect current trends in job requirements for cataloging managers. The purpose of this research study was to determine employers’ current expectations of cataloging managers in academic libraries. A second purpose was to examine how these expectations have changed since 2008. Through deductive thematic content analysis and a univariate approach, researchers identified new trends in cataloging manager job requirements, including additional technology responsibilities and a growing emphasis on diversity and inclusion.
