TL;DR: In this paper, the authors adapt a systematic literature review approach to discern patterns in individual fields and at the intersection, complemented by patterns of trends in contributions by select countries and longitudinal experiential view of more than a quarter century of journey of author across select countries, provided new insights.
Abstract: Fields of strategy, competitiveness, and international business research are evolving steadily as more vexing challenges emerge and demand innovation. Key objective of this study is to longitudinally review literature on competitiveness and innovation to identify future sustainable directions. We adapt a systematic literature review approach to discern patterns in individual fields and at the intersection. This, complemented by review of patterns of trends in contributions by select countries and longitudinal experiential view of more than a quarter century of journey of author across select countries, provided new insights. We use the insights to evolve high-potential future topics for research, clustered by contexts, theory, and practices. This review—at the interfaces of theory and practice, and fields across disciplines—will help readers understand the gaps and explore opportunities for research projects in new directions. Synthesis of findings at the interface would facilitate pathways to further research and practice to enhance competitiveness across levels and sustainability.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have made an attempt to quantify the vital link between technology management and competitiveness by identifying and grouping criteria to quantify technology management maturity and competitiveness for a select set of organisations in high-tech industries.
Abstract: Technology is an important enabler of competitiveness. The strategic management of technology can help organisations sustain their competitiveness. Despite such a vital linkage, only a few organisations in India seem to have been able to implement the technology strategies with remarkable success. An attempt has been made in our research to quantify this vital link between technology management and competitiveness. Criteria were identified and grouped to quantify technology management maturity and competitiveness for a select set of organisations in high-tech industries. The findings of the preliminary research are presented in this paper. The technology management performance was audited using a standard tool. Competitiveness is quantified on four important parameters covering productivity, growth, returns and market capitalisation. The results are quite predictable at times, but surprising in some firms. More research is needed to understand the best practices and diffuse them for sustainable development.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the relationship between flexibility in corporate governance mechanisms and international competitiveness in two knowledge-based industries in India during the period from 2006 to 2014 using multiple regression model.
Abstract: Firms play a key role in growth of India, and there is a need to enhance their competitiveness significantly. For that, they may need higher flexibility in their governance systems. This paper explores the relationship between flexibility in corporate governance (CG) mechanisms and international competitiveness (IC) in two knowledge-based industries in India during the period from 2006 to 2014. Using multiple regression model, the results suggest that flexibility in CG significantly affects IC. In addition, IC increases with the increase in firm size in the presence of other factors such as research and development intensity, marketing intensity, business group affiliation, and industry dummy. Thus, the study is a novel attempt to establish the relationship between flexibility in CG and IC.

TL;DR: In this article, Nonaka and Takeuchi argue that Japanese firms are successful precisely because they are innovative, because they create new knowledge and use it to produce successful products and technologies, and they reveal how Japanese companies translate tacit to explicit knowledge.
Abstract: How has Japan become a major economic power, a world leader in the automotive and electronics industries? What is the secret of their success? The consensus has been that, though the Japanese are not particularly innovative, they are exceptionally skilful at imitation, at improving products that already exist. But now two leading Japanese business experts, Ikujiro Nonaka and Hiro Takeuchi, turn this conventional wisdom on its head: Japanese firms are successful, they contend, precisely because they are innovative, because they create new knowledge and use it to produce successful products and technologies. Examining case studies drawn from such firms as Honda, Canon, Matsushita, NEC, 3M, GE, and the U.S. Marines, this book reveals how Japanese companies translate tacit to explicit knowledge and use it to produce new processes, products, and services.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of literature at the firm level and study of competitiveness-related frameworks and models is presented, where key criteria and sources of competitiveness are synthesized and depicted graphically as connotations of competitiveness.
Abstract: Turbulent start of the new century has brought new challenges for firms, industries and countries. Success in such times is demanding new perspectives on competitiveness: the ability to compete. Detailed structuring of competitiveness related problems of software firms in India identified weaknesses in understanding about the concept and its implementation as root causes. Review of competitiveness-related literature, by classifying it at three levels, clearly indicated the importance of the firm level. The focus of this paper is on review of literature at the firm level and study of competitiveness-related frameworks and models. The studies are further classified on the Asset – Processes – Performance (APP) framework. Key criteria and sources of competitiveness at the firm level are synthesized and depicted graphically as connotations of competitiveness. Select frameworks and models of competitiveness were reviewed and categorized. A sample matrix that can help select frameworks and models is demonstrated. Utility of the APP framework as a tool for integration competitiveness and strategy is explored. Finally, learning from the review and their implications are listed.
