This illuminating new study considers the Bible as a political document in seventeenth-century England, revealing how the religious text provided a key language of political debate and played a critical role in shaping early modern political thinking. Kevin Killeen demonstrates how biblical kings were as important in the era's political thought as any classical model. The book mines the rich and neglected resources of early modern quasi-scriptural writings - treatise, sermon, commentary, annotation, poetry and political tract - to show how deeply embedded this political vocabulary remained, across the century, from top to bottom and across all religious positions. It shows how constitutional thought, in this most tumultuous era of civil war, regicide and republic, was forged on the Bible, and how writers ranging from King James, Joseph Hall or John Milton to Robert Filmer and Thomas Hobbes can be better understood in the context of such vigorous biblical discourse.

The Political Bible in Early Modern England

The renewed interest in the reading of Romans 9-11 over recent decades is indicative of the attempt to settle the controversy concerning the doctrine of double predestination. In reference to Luther’s directive that the theology of the cross be the lens through which all other doctrines be examined, and based on the “New Perspective” on Paul’s writings and his Jewish background, this dissertation reassesses the Reformed doctrine of predestination through Paul’s convictions concerning the cross and his theological reading of the Old Testament. Accordingly, this study establishes that the primary principle which Paul underscores within the context of Romans 9 is that the cross is the supreme expression of God’s purpose of election. The cross of Christ not only is a statement about God’s determination in election, but it also has an existential purpose in its ways and works. Furthermore, the readers of Romans 9 will recognize that when Paul discusses election, he engages a specifically Trinitarian articulation of God, who works out His election of grace in a definite yet surprising manner. Such a reassessed scriptural perspective on the purpose of election is clearly stated in Paul’s understanding of God’s unfolding promises of redemption for both Jews and Gentiles through the suffering Christ. The Purpose of Election in Romans 9:11: Rethinking the Doctrine of Predestination Through the Theology of the Cross

This thesis outlines Archbishop Richard Chenevix Trench’s theology of Scripture, showing that he reads the Bible distinctively by situating him within the broader Victorian Church of England. Furthermore, it argues that because of the clarity with which Trench apprehends the character of Scripture and the interpretive implications of this, he offers a comprehensive paradigm from which one can articulate a coherent understanding of “the fitness of Holy Scripture for unfolding the spiritual life of men.” I examine Trench’s theology of Scripture by way of comparison with other prominent thinkers in the Church of England during his time. First, Charles Simeon’s devout but unidimensional interpretation, which aims to discover the full range of biblical teaching, is set beside Trench’s layered Christological reading of the text. The next chapter discusses Benjamin Jowett’s attempts to uncover the original meaning and context of each passage of Scripture. Trench’s doctrine of the Holy Spirit’s authorship juxtaposes with Jowett, opening room for a further future unfolding of the meaning inherent in Scripture. Trench’s doctrine of Scripture comes into closer focus against the relatively similar exegesis of John Keble on the Parable of the Good Samaritan; one finds Trench has a looser view of ecclesial authority, opting instead for scripturally grounded authority. Aspekte der Beziehungen zwischen Adel und Stadt(bürgern) sind bekannt. Dasselbe gilt für bürgerlichen Landbesitz – quasi die Grundausstattung jeder Arbeit, die sich mit dem Thema auseinandersetzt. Die skandinavischen Beispiele zeigen jedoch, welche Folgen der Landbesitz für verdeckte Herrschaft, Einflussnahme und Informationsfluss haben konnte. Städtenetzwerke sind ebenfalls oft diskutiert worden, aber gerade für die Hanseforschung gilt noch immer die Frage nach der Rolle von Landesherren und Hinterland als Desiderat, wie die Pfingsttagung des Hansischen Geschichtsvereins 2016 unter dem Leitthema „Hansestädte und Landesherrschaft“ vorführte. Die Vorstellung von einer klaren Trennung zwischen Stadt und Land scheint doch hingegen längst überwunden, vielmehr werden bereits Fragen nach Raumwahrnehmungen und der Entstehung von Kommunikations-, Wirtschaftsoder Kult(ur)räumen diskutiert, die in diesem Band keine Berücksichtigung finden. Der Mehrwert dieses Bandes liegt vor allem in der konzisen Einleitung (A. Wilkin, J. Naylor) und dem Fazit (P. Stabel), die sowohl als aktueller Forschungsstand des Feldes gelesen werden können als auch (mit den formulierten Einschränkungen) zentrale Fragen und Ansprüche an künftige Untersuchungen formulieren. Die Beiträge, die für sich sämtlich ein hohes Niveau besitzen, sich dann aber doch eher in den klassischen Kategorien bewegen, ermöglichen in ihrer Gesamtschau einen vergleichenden überregionalen Überblick.

Zusammenfassung Der Aufsatz zielt auf einen Vergleich des Verhältnisses zwischen Christen und Muslimen in Italien und auf der Iberischen Halbinsel im 9. Jahrhundert. Vor dem Hintergrund der wissenschaftlichen Diskurse zur Entstehung Europas, zur Frage der Beschaffenheit des Kulturkontakts (friedliches Zusammenleben gegenüber dem Zusammenstoß der Kulturen) sowie zum Gewaltpotential in den monotheistischen Religionen werden verschiedene Konstellationen untersucht. Dabei ergibt die Interpretation des italischen Materials, für das die „päpstlichen“ Quellen zentral sind, dass Konfrontationsmuster vielfach weniger religiös als staatlich geprägt waren. Auch pragmatisches Handeln durch Tribute und Schutzzahlungen sowie Konflikte mit den benachbarten Gemeinschaften wie Neapel oder Amalfi gehören in den Kontext der Auseinandersetzung. Die Lebensumstände der Christen unter muslimischer Herrschaft auf der Iberischen Halbinsel erwiesen sich andererseits durch den Blick auf Binnenstrukturen (in Abkehr von der essentialistischen Definition der „Mozaraber“) ebenso als komplexer. Die Konzeptionen in den kleinen christlichen Reichen des Nordens scheinen entscheidend gewesen zu sein, um Bilder des Mit- und Gegeneinanders auf der Iberischen Halbinsel zu prägen. Aus dem Vergleich der Begrifflichkeiten, der Binnendifferenzierungen innerhalb der christlichen Gruppen, des pragmatischen Handelns und der insgesamt nur diffusen, eher polemisch geprägten Wahrnehmung religiöser Vorstellungen der anderen Seite ergeben sich vergleichend die verschiedenen genannten Gemeinsamkeiten, aber auch Unterschiede (zum Beispiel hinsichtlich der Kreuzzugskonzeptionen). Als deren Ursache können unter anderem die Rolle des Papsttums in Italien sowie die unterschiedlichen politischen Voraussetzungen beider Räume angesehen werden. Abstract The article is directed at a comparison of the relationship between Christians and Muslims in Italy and on the Iberian Peninsula in the 9th century. Different constellations are analysed against the background of the academic discourses concerning the creation of Europe, the question of the nature of the cultural encounter (a peaceful coexistence compared to the clash of cultures) as well as the potential for violence in monotheistic religions. The interpretation of the Italicmaterial, which the „papal” sources are crucial for, reveals that the patterns of confrontation were in many cases less influenced by religion than by the state. Also pragmatic action by tribute and protection money as well as conflicts with the neighbouring communities like Naples or Amalfi should be included in confrontation. On the other hand, the living conditions of the Christians under Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula with regard to internal structures (in renunciation of the essentialistic definition of the „Mozarabs“) also turned out to be more complex. The conceptions in the small Christian empires of the North seemed to be decisive to shape images of the cooperation and the conflict on the Iberian Peninsula. The comparison of the notions, the internal differentiations within the Christian groups, the pragmatic action and the only vaguely, rather polemically characterized perception of religious ideas of the others results in several similarities but also differences mentioned above (for example concerning conceptions of the crusades). Both the role of the papacy in Italy and the different political conditions of both spaces can be regarded – among others – as their reason.
