TL;DR: The authors conducted an acoustic analysis of French wh-in-sit interrogative sentences and found that the in situ wh-word had an elevated high pitch accent, indicating that instead of the sentence-final rise being optional, it may instead be variable and predictable by focus placed on the whword, for discourse reasons.
