TL;DR: This paper examined faculty work life and administrative processes related to curriculum change in merged community and technical colleges and found that the focus on workforce development and decrease in the transfer mission has diminished the liberal arts courses in the college curriculum.
Abstract: This study is an examination of the state of the liberal arts curriculum in community colleges in three geographic regions of the United States. From a constructivist paradigm and using globalization theory as a theoretical framework, this multiple case study examined faculty work life and administrative processes related to curriculum change in merged community and technical colleges. Through an examination of research on globalization, mergers, and trends in the general education and liberal arts curriculum, a gap in the literature emerged in the studies of community college curriculums after merger. This study considers whether the focus on workforce development and decrease in the transfer mission has diminished the liberal arts courses in the college curriculum. Research on liberal arts courses identified them as courses that emphasize higher order thinking and the development of intellectual skills needed to engage in a democratic society. If students are not exposed to these skills, it may have a d...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a comparative thematic review of the research and literature on leadership in vocational education between the USA, Great Britain and Australia and identify key impact factors for vocational education leadership in these nations over the last 13 years.
Abstract: Vocational education and its leadership is an important sphere of economic activity worldwide and is being impacted by several trends including: the increasing significance and centrality of skills development in today’s economies; economic trends associated with globalisation (internationalisation of education and emergence of global labour markets); and demographic trends resulting in ageing populations and workforces. TL;DR: An integrative review of caring research indicates that caring can be taught to nursing students and suggests that curricular and instructional approaches are critical to enhancing nursing students’ levels of caring.
Abstract: Background: Assuring undergraduate nursing students are caring and compassionate is an important goal of nursing education programs. Some research has been conducted to examine interventions to enhance nursing students’ levels of caring. Methods: We conducted an integrative review of caring research and found fifteen articles reporting educational interventions designed to enhance caring among undergraduate pre-licensure nursing students. We reviewed each for how caring was taught and the student outcomes. Results: Our analysis indicates that caring can be taught to nursing students. Effective educational interventions included engaging students in authentic conditions that required them to provide care, reflection on the care they provided, and faculty members role modeling caring behaviors. Conclusions: Implications for nursing educators is that their curricular and instructional approaches are critical to enhancing nursing students’ levels of caring.

TL;DR: Pribesh et al. as mentioned in this paper surveyed a targeted group of Virginia workforce development stakeholders including 17 Virginia Community College System workforce development leaders who represent each local community college, 47 Virginia local and regional economic development directors, and 11 Virginia Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act directors.
Abstract: A WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT STUDY TO EXPLORE CURRENT DEMAND FOR INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CREDENTIALS Debra Kay Smiley Old Dominion University, 2018 Chair: Shana Pribesh, Ph.D. In this descriptive research study, I identified industry-recognized workforce credentials that are or will be in high demand by employers operating in Virginia. I surveyed a targeted group of Virginia workforce development stakeholders including 17 Virginia Community College System workforce development leaders who represent each local community college, 47 Virginia local and regional economic development directors, and 11 Virginia Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act directors. Due to the economic disparity between rural and urban areas, I also examined the contrast between high-demand credentials needed by employers in rural and urban areas. The findings revealed that the top two industry-recognized credentials were health care and manufacturing, equally in high demand currently and predicted to remain so in the future. This finding represents a significant contrast with earlier research, which indicated that manufacturing lagged behind health care. In health care, respondents identified the specific credentials such as certified nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, and registered nurse. For the manufacturing field, credentials such as machinists, welders, and maintenance technicians were identified. The urban respondents differed from rural and suburban participants in believing that health care was the most important, although this difference was not statistically significant. Funding and facilities were noted as barriers to delivering high-demand workforce credentials. .
