Best Practices for Integrating E-books in Academic Libraries: A Literature Review From 2005 to Present

As computer usage continues to grow exponentially, the desire of users to use electronic publications(e-publications) has also increased tremendously. This has led to the publication of materials in electronic formas e-publications on both CD-ROMs and web. The electronic book (e-book) is one of the several forms ofe-publications and its popularity has been growing steadily for the past decade. This bibliography providesall references of the published literature on e-books and related technologies in one source so that it will savetime for others in conducting literature searches and reviewing the developments. The information includedin this bibliography is collected systematically from all the published sources in the world such as journalarticles, conference papers, conference proceedings, books, reports and PhD theses on e-books until thelast quarter of 2011. Mainly, it covers e-books, e-books publishing, the impact of e-books on different typesof users, e-book publishing techniques and trends, e-book user interfaces and other technologies related toe-publications. Electronic Books: A Bibliography

The effect of electronic books on the reading comprehension of middle and high school students was examined using an experimental posttest-only control-group design. A convenience sample of 140 randomly assigned middle and high school English students at an independent school in eastern North Carolina participated. Half of the students used passages from text read on tablets while half utilized traditional print text passages. Data was collected during one class period in which the reading comprehension section of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests®, a 35 minute test containing 48 questions, was administered. Reading comprehension data was analyzed using an independent t-test. The effect of electronic books on the reading motivation of middle and high school students was examined using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control-group design. All students from the Reading Comprehension testing took the initial Motivations for Reading Questionnaire, a 15-20 minute survey containing 53 questions, on day two. A posttest MRQ was administered in which 27 participants completed the MRQ after reading a book excerpt in paper form, and 27 participants completed the MRQ after reading the same excerpt in electronic form. Reading motivation data was analyzed using a MANOVA. Results demonstrated no significant differences in either reading comprehension or motivation levels based on book format.  Download

Purpose – This paper aims to review the literature dealing with e‐books to identify trends.Design/methodology/approach – The review is based on the literature published during January to December 2010. For this purpose, literature on e‐books was searched and retrieved from LISA, LISTA, Emerald, Science Direct and J‐store. E‐books, electronic books, digital books, e‐book reader, were the keywords used for searching the literature in these databases. The literature is analyzed and reviewed under various broad categories. Most of the literature reviewed is in English. Non‐English literature reported in the LISA is also considered.Findings – In spite of the unconcluded debate of print versus electronic, popularity of e‐books is increasing and thereby the e‐book market is growing at a very fast pace. Cataloguing practices from creation to use: A study of Cape Town Metropolitan Public Libraries in Western Cape Province, South Africa

E-books have become a substantial part of many academic library collections. Catalog records for each e-book title enhance discovery by library users, but cataloging individual books may be impossible when large packages are purchased. Increasingly, libraries are relying on outside sources for their e-book catalog records, which may come from vendors or third-party record services and are frequently included in the price of a subscription. Rather than handling individual items, catalogers find themselves managing and manipulating large sets of catalog records. While dealing with the records in batch is the only practical way to provide access to the large sets, batch processing does bring about a new set of challenges. This paper will explore the challenges of managing Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) records for the Springer e-book collection at the University of Illinois at Chicago University Library. It discusses tools and methods to improve record quality while working in a consortial setting. It provides lessons learned, continuing challenges of working with vendor records, and some steps that might help other libraries expedite the process of getting vendor records into the catalog.

Notes on operations cataloging e-books and vendor records: a case study at the University of Illinois at Chicago

This paper surveys the English-language literature on cataloging and classification published during 2011 and 2012, covering both theory and application. A major theme of the literature centered on Resource Description and Access (RDA), as the period covered in this review includes the conclusion of the RDA test, revisions to RDA, and the implementation decision. Explorations in the theory and practical applications of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), upon which RDA is organized, are also heavily represented. Library involvement with linked data through the creation of prototypes and vocabularies are explored further during the period. Other areas covered in the review include: classification, controlled vocabularies and name authority, evaluation and history of cataloging, special formats cataloging, cataloging and discovery services, non-AACR2/RDA metadata, cataloging workflows, and the education and careers of catalogers.
