TL;DR: In this paper , the surface properties of transferred graphene were investigated according to the transfer method (wet vs. dry) and characterized using atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements.
Abstract: Graphene, an atomically thin material, has unique electrical, mechanical, and optical properties that can enhance the performance of thin film-based flexible and transparent devices, including gas sensors. Graphene synthesized on a metallic catalyst must first be transferred onto a target substrate using wet or dry transfer processes; however, the graphene surface is susceptible to chemical modification and mechanical damage during the transfer. Defects on the graphene surface deteriorate its excellent intrinsic properties, thus reducing device performance. In this study, the surface properties of transferred graphene were investigated according to the transfer method (wet vs. dry) and characterized using atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. After the wet transfer process, the surface properties of graphene exhibited tendencies similar to the poly(methyl methacrylate) residue remaining after solvent etching. The dry-transferred graphene revealed a surface closer to that of pristine graphene, regardless of substrates. These results provide insight into the utilization of wet and dry transfer processes for various graphene applications.

TL;DR: In this article, a study of the regioselectivities of myo-inositol derivatives toward electrophiles using various levels of quantum mechanical calculation: Hartree−Fock (HF) theory, Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation (MP2), density functional theory (DFT), and self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) theory was conducted.
Abstract: Understanding the origin of the regioselectivity of inositol derivatives is essential to the synthetic design of these biologically important molecules. We have undertaken a study of the regioselectivities displayed by the myo-inositol derivatives toward electrophiles using various levels of quantum mechanical calculation: Hartree−Fock (HF) theory, Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation (MP2) theory, density functional theory (DFT), and self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) theory. Various basis sets were also tested. The systems investigated here are 1,2:4,5-di-O-methylidene-myo-inositol and its probable intermediates (deprotonated and sodium-chelated species). In experiments the O3 position was the major site for derivatization of the molecule. However, the MP2 and DFT results could not explain the experiments. Taking into account that the myo-inositol derivatives were highly insoluble with the exception of some polar solvents, we performed the SCRF calculations using the dielectric constant (e) of 4...

TL;DR: Several prominent OH...O short hydrogen-bond stretching peaks are predicted in the range of 1000-1700 cm(-1) in the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations, which show distinctive signatures different from ordinary hydrogen- bond peaks.
Abstract: Protonated and deprotonated adipic acids (PAA: HOOC-(CH(2))(4)--COOH(2) (+) and DAA: HOOC-(CH(2))(4)-COO(-)) have a charged hydrogen bond under the influence of steric constraint due to the molecular skeleton of a circular ring. Despite the similarity between PAA and DAA, it is surprising that the lowest energy structure of PAA is predicted to have (H(2)O...H...OH(2))(+) Zundel-like symmetric hydrogen bonding, whereas that of DAA has H(3)O(+) Eigen-like asymmetric hydrogen bonding. The energy profiles show that direct proton transfer between mirror image structures is unfavorable. Instead, the chiral transformation is possible by subsequent backbone twistings through stepwise proton transfer along multistep intermediate structures, which are Zundel-like ions for PAA and Eigen-like ions for DAA. This type of chiral transformation by multistep intramolecular proton transfers is unprecedented. Several prominent OH...O short hydrogen-bond stretching peaks are predicted in the range of 1000-1700 cm(-1) in the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations, which show distinctive signatures different from ordinary hydrogen-bond peaks. The O-H-O stretching peaks in the range of 1800-2700 cm(-1) become insignificant above around 150 K and are almost washed out at about 300 K.

TL;DR: A bivalent Cu(I,II) metal-organic framework (MOF) based on the 4,4',4″s-Triazine-2,4,6-triyl-tribenzoate linker was synthesized via a solvothermal method as mentioned in this paper .
Abstract: A bivalent Cu(I,II) metal-organic framework (MOF) based on the 4,4',4″-s-Triazine-2,4,6-triyl-tribenzoate linker was synthesized via a solvothermal method. The MOF possessed 43.8% of the Cu sites as Cu+ with a surface area of 1257 m2 g-1. The detailed spectroscopic analysis confirmed dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent as the reductant responsible for Cu+ sites in the synthesized MOF. The Cu+ sites were easily accessible and prone to oxidation in hot water or acidic gas environment. The MOF showed water-induced structural change, which could be partially recovered after soaking in DMF solvent. The synthesized MOF showed a high hydrogen sulfide (H2S) uptake capacity of 4.3 mmol g-1 at 298 K and an extremely low H2S pressure of 0.0005 bar. The adsorption capacity was the highest among Cu-based MOFs with PCN-6-M being regenerable, which made it useful for deep desulfurization applications. The adsorbed H2S was mineralized to sulfide, sulfur, and sulfates, mediated by the Cu+/Cu2+ redox cycle in the presence of adsorbed water and molecular oxygen. Thus, the study confirmed that DMF as a reductant is responsible for the origin of bivalency in PCN-6-M and possibly in other Cu-based MOFs reported in the literature. Also, the developed MOF could be a potential candidate for flue gas desulfurization and gas purification applications.

Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.

TL;DR: QUANTUM ESPRESSO as discussed by the authors is an integrated suite of computer codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling, based on density functional theory, plane waves, and pseudopotentials (norm-conserving, ultrasoft, and projector-augmented wave).
Abstract: QUANTUM ESPRESSO is an integrated suite of computer codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling, based on density-functional theory, plane waves, and pseudopotentials (norm-conserving, ultrasoft, and projector-augmented wave). The acronym ESPRESSO stands for opEn Source Package for Research in Electronic Structure, Simulation, and Optimization. It is freely available to researchers around the world under the terms of the GNU General Public License. QUANTUM ESPRESSO builds upon newly-restructured electronic-structure codes that have been developed and tested by some of the original authors of novel electronic-structure algorithms and applied in the last twenty years by some of the leading materials modeling groups worldwide. Innovation and efficiency are still its main focus, with special attention paid to massively parallel architectures, and a great effort being devoted to user friendliness. QUANTUM ESPRESSO is evolving towards a distribution of independent and interoperable codes in the spirit of an open-source project, where researchers active in the field of electronic-structure calculations are encouraged to participate in the project by contributing their own codes or by implementing their own ideas into existing codes.
