Journal ArticleDOI
Peptidylarginine deiminase from Porphyromonas gingivalis citrullinates human fibrinogen and α-enolase: Implications for autoimmunity in rheumatoid arthritis
Natalia Wegner,Robin Wait,Aneta Sroka,Sigrun Eick,Ky-Anh Nguyen,Karin Lundberg,Andrew J Kinloch,Shauna Culshaw,Jan Potempa,Jan Potempa,Patrick J Venables +10 more
TL;DR: It is shown that P gingivalis rapidly generates citrullinated host peptides by proteolytic cleavage at Arg-X peptide bonds by arginine gingipains, followed bycitrullination of carboxy-terminal arginines by bacterial PAD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dichotomy of gingipains action as virulence factors: from cleaving substrates with the precision of a surgeon’s knife to a meat chopper‐like brutal degradation of proteins
TL;DR: Gingipains are absolutely essential for bacterial survival/proliferation in vivo and for the pathological outcome of the experimental infection of P. gingivalis, the most prevailing form of periodontal disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Porphyromonas gingivalis facilitates the development and progression of destructive arthritis through its unique bacterial peptidylarginine deiminase (PAD).
Katarzyna Maresz,Annelie Hellvard,Annelie Hellvard,Aneta Sroka,Karina Adamowicz,Ewa Bielecka,Joanna Koziel,Katarzyna Gawron,Danuta Mizgalska,Katarzyna Marcińska,Malgorzata Benedyk,Krzysztof Pyrc,Anne-Marie Quirke,Roland Jonsson,Saba Alzabin,Patrick J Venables,Ky-Anh Nguyen,Ky-Anh Nguyen,Piotr Mydel,Piotr Mydel,Jan Potempa,Jan Potempa +21 more
TL;DR: It is shown that infection with viable periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis strain W83 exacerbated collagen-induced arthritis in a mouse model, as manifested by earlier onset, accelerated progression and enhanced severity of the disease, including significantly increased bone and cartilage destruction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bacterial profile of dentine caries and the impact of pH on bacterial population diversity.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that some bacterial species implicated in caries progression show selective clustering with respect to pH gradient, providing a basis for specific therapeutic strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Roles of the Host Oxidative Immune Response and Bacterial Antioxidant Rubrerythrin during Porphyromonas gingivalis Infection
Piotr Mydel,Piotr Mydel,Yusuke Takahashi,Yusuke Takahashi,Hiromichi Yumoto,Hiromichi Yumoto,Maryta Sztukowska,Maryta Sztukowska,Malgorzata Kubica,Frank C. Gibson,Donald M. Kurtz,J. Travis,L. Vincent Collins,Ky-Anh Nguyen,Caroline A. Genco,Jan Potempa,Jan Potempa +16 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that the host oxidative burst paradoxically enhances the survival of P. gingivalis by exacerbating local and systemic inflammation, thereby contributing to the morbidity and mortality associated with infection.
