A Survey of Urban Reconstruction

Repeated structures such as building facades, fences or road markings often represent a significant challenge for place recognition. Repeated structures are notoriously hard for establishing correspondences using multi-view geometry. Even more importantly, they violate the feature independence assumed in the bag-of-visual-words representation which often leads to over-counting evidence and significant degradation of retrieval performance. In this work we show that repeated structures are not a nuisance but, when appropriately represented, they form an important distinguishing feature for many places. We describe a representation of repeated structures suitable for scalable retrieval. It is based on robust detection of repeated image structures and a simple modification of weights in the bag-of-visual-word model. Place recognition results are shown on datasets of street-level imagery from Pittsburgh and San Francisco demonstrating significant gains in recognition performance compared to the standard bag-of-visual-words baseline and more recently proposed burstiness weighting.

Visual Place Recognition with Repetitive Structures

In this paper, we propose a new tool to efficiently extract a class of "low-rank textures" in a 3D scene from user-specified windows in 2D images despite significant corruptions and warping. The low-rank textures capture geometrically meaningful structures in an image, which encompass conventional local features such as edges and corners as well as many kinds of regular, symmetric patterns ubiquitous in urban environments and man-made objects. Our approach to finding these low-rank textures leverages the recent breakthroughs in convex optimization that enable robust recovery of a high-dimensional low-rank matrix despite gross sparse errors. In the case of planar regions with significant affine or projective deformation, our method can accurately recover both the intrinsic low-rank texture and the unknown transformation, and hence both the geometry and appearance of the associated planar region in 3D. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that this new technique works effectively for many regular and near-regular patterns or objects that are approximately low-rank, such as symmetrical patterns, building facades, printed text, and human faces.

TILT: Transform Invariant Low-Rank Textures

We propose a novel and robust computational framework for automatic detection of deformed 2D wallpaper patterns in real-world images. The theory of 2D crystallographic groups provides a sound and natural correspondence between the underlying lattice of a deformed wallpaper pattern and a degree-4 graphical model. We start the discovery process with unsupervised clustering of interest points and voting for consistent lattice unit proposals. The proposed lattice basis vectors and pattern element contribute to the pairwise compatibility and joint compatibility (observation model) functions in a Markov random field (MRF). Thus, we formulate the 2D lattice detection as a spatial, multitarget tracking problem, solved within an MRF framework using a novel and efficient mean-shift belief propagation (MSBP) method. Iterative detection and growth of the deformed lattice are interleaved with regularized thin-plate spline (TPS) warping, which rectifies the current deformed lattice into a regular one to ensure stability of the MRF model in the next round of lattice recovery. We provide quantitative comparisons of our proposed method with existing algorithms on a diverse set of 261 real-world photos to demonstrate significant advances in accuracy and speed over the state of the art in automatic discovery of regularity in real images.

Deformed Lattice Detection in Real-World Images Using Mean-Shift Belief Propagation

We introduce a novel image defencing method suitable for consumer photography, where plausible results must be achieved under common camera settings. First, detection of lattices with see-through texels is performed in an iterative process using online learning and classification from intermediate results to aid subsequent detection. Then, segmentation of the foreground is performed using accumulated statistics from all lattice points. Next, multi-view inpainting is performed to fill in occluded areas with information from shifted views where parts of the occluded regions may be visible. For regions occluded in all views, we use novel symmetry-augmented inpainting, which combines traditional texture synthesis with an increased pool of candidate patches found by simulating bilateral symmetry patterns from the source image. The results show the effectiveness of our proposed method.

An important finding in our understanding of the human vision system is perceptual grouping, the mechanism by which visual elements are organized into coherent groups. Though grouping is generally acknowledged to be a crucial component of the mid-level visual system, in computer vision there is a scarcity of mid-level cues due to computational difficulties in constructing feature detectors for such cues. We propose a novel mid-level visual feature detector where the visual elements are grouped based on the 2D translation subgroup of a wallpaper pattern. Different from previous state-of-the-art lattice detection algorithms for near-regular wallpaper patterns, our proposed method can detect multiple, semantically relevant 2D lattices in a scene simultaneously, achieving an effective translation-symmetry-based segmentation. Our experimental results on urban scenes demonstrate the use of translation-symmetry for building facade super-resolution and orientation estimation from a single view.
