Wood Science and Technology

At present, China is the world's largest producer of bamboo resource possessor and bamboo processing. The main processing method of bamboo recombination technology is rolling and compaction, by which a reconstituted material with bamboo fibrotic veneer as matrix and phenolic resin as reinforcement is prepared. It has excellent physical and mechanical properties and can replace high-quality wood to manufacture various engineering structural materials and building decoration materials. This paper reviewed the research process and progress of bamboo recombination technology, the existing technical problems and prospects, in order to provide references for future research on bamboo recombination theory and production practice. In recent years, as a new material with controllable properties, designable structures, and adjustable dimensions, bamboo reconstituted materials have been comprehensively studied from the aspects of pressing process parameters, physicochemical mechanical properties evaluation system, and microstructure characterization, but the research is not comprehensive and has not in-depth view. In the future, the relationship between microstructure and performance should be emphatically studied to clarify the law of mechanical performance change and ultimate mechanical performance under synergistic enhancement effect, as well as the performance change and interface formation of the resin during the entire molding process. Meanwhile, the reliability and relevance of applied research should be further expanded, and the integration of natural and artificial aging environment, process and performance, and macro- and microscales should be strengthened.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of accelerated aging on compression strength, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, color change, volumetric swelling, and volumetric shrinkage of bamboo specimens with and without node sections. In the study, these properties were compared with those of Scots pine and beech wood specimens. Depending on bamboo sections, the aging procedure reduced modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and compression strength. Bamboo specimens showed relatively high strength properties compared to wood specimens due to having high density. Strength properties increased from bottom to top of bamboo culms. The presence of nodes in the specimens reduced compression strength and modulus of rupture but affected modulus of elasticity slightly. Remarkable color changes in specimens were observed after aging. Volumetric swelling and shrinkage of bamboo specimens exposed to aging decreased probably due to heat effect of aging procedure.

Effect of accelerated aging on some physical and mechanical properties of bamboo

Reconstituted bamboo Lumber suffers surface and mechanical properties degradation after exposure to outdoor environment. In this paper, Neosinocalamus affinis bamboo bundles was selected to thermo-treated at three temperature levels (160,180 and 200°C) for 2 hours and investigated the effect of xenon-arc light irradiation with water spray on the changes in color, thickness and mechanical properties of reconstituted bamboo lumber. The results indicated that the surface color of the samples changed rapidly during the irradiation process and the change rate decreased as the increasing of thermo-treated temperature. The mechanical properties analysis indicated that MOE wasn’t much affected by the thermo-treated and artificial weathering test, whereas MOR and shear strength decrease after exposure. The thickness swelling after exposure was improved by the thermo-treatment and decreased as the treated temperature increased.
