The Behavioral Response to Personalized Genetic Information: Will Genetic Risk Profiles Motivate Individuals and Families to Choose More Healthful Behaviors?

TL;DR: The use of information emerging from genetic discovery to motivate risk-reducing health behaviors is described and consideration of using genetic information to identify risk shared within kinship networks and to expand the influence of behavior change beyond the individual is considered.
Journal ArticleDOI

Validation of the modified Fagerström tolerance questionnaire with salivary cotinine among adolescents.

TL;DR: The relationship between a seven-item modified FTQ and saliva continine among 131 adolescent volunteers in a smoking cessation program provides preliminary evidence that the modified FT Q scale is valid and applicable to adolescent smokers.
Journal ArticleDOI

How families communicate about HNPCC genetic testing: Findings from a qualitative study

TL;DR: Findings from a qualitative study of 39 adult members from five families with known HNPCC‐predisposing mutations are described, which concluded that genetic counseling should attempt to identify the existing communication norms within families and ways that family members can take an active role in encouraging others to learn about their cancer risk and options for testing.
Journal Article

A social network analysis of communication about hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer genetic testing and family functioning

TL;DR: Results of this study suggest encouraging family members who act in the mother role to take a "team approach" with the family proband when discussing HNPCC risks and management with family members.
Journal ArticleDOI

Future health applications of genomics: priorities for communication, behavioral, and social sciences research.

TL;DR: The priorities and themes of an interdisciplinary group of scientists to recommend forward-looking priorities for translational research offer a framework for a variety of stakeholders, including those who develop priorities for research funding, interdisciplinary teams engaged in genomics research, and policymakers grappling with how to use the products born of genomicsResearch to address public health challenges.
