Bodies That Matter: On the Discursive Limits of “Sex”

Several motivations have prompted the scientific community towards the application of hybrid magnetic carbon nanocomposites in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) processes. The most relevant literature on this topic is reviewed, with a special focus on the synergies that can arise from the combination of highly active and magnetically separable iron species with the easily tuned properties of carbon-based materials. These are mainly ascribed to increased adsorptive interactions, to good structural stability and low leaching levels of the metal species, and to increased regeneration and dispersion of the active sites, which are promoted by the presence of the carbon-based materials in the composites. The most significant features of carbon materials that may be further explored in the design of improved hybrid magnetic catalysts are also addressed, taking into consideration the experimental knowledge gathered by the authors in their studies and development of carbon-based catalysts for CWPO. The presence of stable metal impurities, basic active sites and sulphur-containing functionalities, as well as high specific surface area, adequate porous texture, adsorptive interactions and structural defects, are shown to increase the activity of carbon materials when applied in CWPO, while the presence of acidic oxygen-containing functionalities has the opposite effect.

Simultaneous removal of aniline, antimony and chromium by ZVI coupled with H2O2: Implication for textile wastewater treatment.

Organic–inorganic hybrid of cobalt phosphonate hollow nanostructured spheres were prepared in a water–ethanol system through a mild hydrothermal process in the absence of any templates using diethylenetriamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid) as bridging molecule. SEM, TEM and N2 sorption characterization confirmed a hollow spherical micromorphology with well-defined porosity. The structure and chemical states of the hybrid materials were investigated by FT-IR, XPS and thermogravimetric analysis, revealing the homogeneous integrity of inorganic and organic units inside the network. As a heterogeneous catalyst, hollow cobalt phosphonate material exhibited considerable catalytic oxidizing decomposition of methylene blue with sulfate radicals as compared to cobalt phosphonate nanoparticles synthesized in single water system, which could be attributed to enhanced mass transfer and high surface area for the hollow material. Some operational parameters, including pH and reaction temperature, were found to influence the oxidation process. The present results suggest that cobalt phosphonate material can perform as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of organic contaminants, providing insights into the rational design and development of alternative catalysts for wastewater treatment.

The article considers the main dimensions of the conservative Catholic activism on sexuality by considering the encyclical Evangelium Vitae (1995). The analysis focuses on three dimensions: the opposition between culture of life and culture of death as the political framing; the displacement of conservative catholic activism in order to intervene in public debates; the main strategies to avoid sexual and reproductive rights. Through these dimensions, the article contributes to the understanding of the Catholic Church as a crucial player in contemporary sexual politics.

La "cultura de la vida": desplazamientos estratégicos del activismo católico conservador frente a los derechos sexuales y reproductivos

Este artigo versa sobre respostas religiosas a diversidade sexual de segmentos  religiosos conservadores. Analisa articulacoes entre percepcoes religiosas da diversidade sexual e medos coletivos desencadeados pelas transformacoes culturais ligadas ao reconhecimento e visibilidade LGBT no cenario contemporâneo, partindo de material etnografico bastante heterogeneo, composto por textos e artigos recolhidos atraves de um mapeamento de midia impressa evangelica, sites religiosos na Internet, posicionamentos oficiais e outros documentos, coletados entre os anos de 2007 e 2008.  A luz de discussao teorica sobre a discriminacao que incide sobre gays e lesbicas, o artigo desenvolve uma reflexao sobre as relacoes contemporâneas entre religioes cristas, diversidade sexual e formas de homofobia, atraves da analise de discursos religiosos que circulam na esfera publica a respeito de direitos LGBT e politicas publicas voltadas as minorias sexuais. Problematiza a construcao de uma personagem homossexual como individuo perigoso e aponta dinâmicas de estigmatizacao que produz sujeitos de segunda categoria. It explores articulations between religious perceptions of the sexual diversity and collective fears unleashed by cultural transformations linked to LGBT (Lesbians, Gays, Bissexuals and Transsexuals) recognition and visibility in the contemporary scenario, analyzing heterogeneous ethnographic material composed by texts and articles, gathered through a map of printed gospel media, religious websites, official positions and other documents collected between 2007 and 2008. By the light of theoretical discussion on discrimination that affects gays and lesbians, our aim is to develop a reflection on the contemporary relations between Christian religions, sexual diversity and homophobia, through the analysis of the religious discourse about sexual minorities” rights and politics in the public sphere. The analisys points to the construction of the homosexual as a dangerous person and reveals a dynamic of stigmatization and diminishing of these citizens. Potential of modified iron-rich foundry waste for environmental applications: Fenton reaction and Cr(VI) reduction.

O artigo tematiza respostas a diversidade sexual em redes religiosas evangelicas. Reflete, particularmente, sobre formas de regulacao da sexualidade que transparecem nos discursos sobre o “acolhimento” aos homossexuais entre certas correntes e denominacoes. Esta analise se debruca sobre documentos coletados em um monitoramento de sites de internet, incluindo materiais veiculados por ministerios de “ajuda” para “sair da homossexualidade”, testemunhos e interacao em foruns virtuais. Argumentamos que este aparato regulatorio, que se manifesta por uma atitude de cuidado para com o outro, visa a supressao da diversidade na esfera da sexualidade e do genero, podendo desde modo ser qualificado como uma forma velada e insidiosa de homofobia.

God “Transforms” or God “Accepts”? Dilemmas of the Construction of Identity Among LGBT Evangelicals

O artigo discute o tema da revelacao da orientacao homossexual para a familia de origem sob a perspectiva da antropologia das emocoes, a partir da experiencia de uma jovem lesbica de camadas medias. O depoimento tematiza tensoes vivenciadas na esfera domestica apos a revelacao da orientacao sexual para os pais, com destaque para uma situacao especifica, na qual a mae teria expressado “vergonha” pelo fato de ter uma filha “lesbica”. A “vergonha” da mae e considerada insultante pela filha, pois recusa uma forma de consideracao almejada. A analise evidencia como discursos emocionais podem operar micropoliticamente, nao apenas na demarcacao e reforco de hierarquias, mas tambem em sua contestacao.
