TL;DR: In this article, a prospective clinical study was conducted to evaluate the long-term biosafety and efficacy of transplantation of human embryonic stem cells-derived retinal pigment epithelial (hESC-RPE) cells in early stage of Stargardt macular degeneration (STGD1).
Abstract: Objectives To evaluate the long-term biosafety and efficacy of transplantation of human embryonic stem cells-derived retinal pigment epithelial (hESC-RPE) cells in early-stage of Stargardt macular degeneration (STGD1). Materials and methods Seven patients participated in this prospective clinical study, where they underwent a single subretinal transplantation of 1 × 105 hESC-RPE cells in one eye, whereas the fellow eye served as control. These patients were reassessed for a 60-month follow-up through systemic and ophthalmic examinations. Results None of the patients experienced adverse reactions systemically or locally, except for two who had transiently high intraocular pressure post-operation. Functional assessments demonstrated that all of the seven operated eyes had transiently increased or stable visual function 1-4 months after transplantation. At the last follow-up visit, two of the seven eyes showed visual function loss than the baseline; however, one of them showed a stable visual acuity when compared with the change of fellow eye. Obvious small high reflective foci in the RPE layer were displayed after the transplantation, and maintained until the last visit. Interestingly, three categories of patients who were classified based on autofluorescence, exhibited distinctive patterns of morphological and functional change. Conclusions Subretinal transplantation of hESC-RPE in early-stage STGD1 is safe and tolerated in the long term. Further investigation is needed for choosing proper subjects according to the multi-model image and function assessments.

TL;DR: Winter chilling and spring forcing accumulation in relation to the spring phenology of three tree species growing in a cold region (CR) compared with trees in a warmer reference region (WR) using the Dynamic Model and the Growing Degree Hour model confirmed that chilling and forcing occur simultaneously during the early spring when temperature gradually increases.

TL;DR: The authors examined how individuals' cultural value orientations impact two separate stages of creativity: idea generation and idea implementation, and found that vertical individualism was not correlated to either idea generation or idea implementation.
Abstract: This study is among the first to examine how individuals’ cultural value orientations impact 2 separate stages of creativity: idea generation and idea implementation. A total of 247 Chinese employees completed questionnaires including individualism–collectivism culture orientation and their idea generation behavior. Supervisor ratings of idea implementation were obtained to avoid single-source bias. Partial correlation results showed that both horizontal individualism and horizontal collectivism had positive influences on idea generation, but vertical collectivism had a positive impact on idea implementation. Although vertical individualism was not correlated to either idea generation or idea implementation, it moderated the relationship between these two stages such that idea generation predicted idea implementation better among high vertical individualists than among low vertical individualists. Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed.

TL;DR: The rice lesion mimic mutant spotted leaf 1 ( spl1) was first identified in the rice cultivar Asahi in 1965 and found to confer resistance to multiple isolates of rice blast, and a map-based cloning strategy was employed to localize the Spl1 gene.
Abstract: The rice lesion mimic mutant spotted leaf 1 ( spl1) was first identified in the rice ( Oryza sativa) cultivar Asahi in 1965. This mutant displayed spontaneous disease-like lesions in the absence of any pathogen, and was found to confer resistance to multiple isolates of rice blast. We employed a map-based cloning strategy to localize the Spl1 gene. A total of ten cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) markers linked to the Spl1 gene were identified and mapped to an 8.5-cM region on chromosome 12. A high-resolution genetic map was developed using these ten CAPS markers and a segregating population consisting of 3202 individuals. A BAC contig containing four BAC clones was constructed, and Spl1 was localized to a 423-kb region. Seven spl1 mutants were obtained from the IR64 deletion mutant collection, and molecular analysis using these mutants delimited the Spl1 gene to a 70-kb interval, covered by two BAC clones. These results provide the basis for cloning this gene, which is involved in cell death and disease resistance in rice.

TL;DR: In this article, a two-dimensional version of the Pennsylvania State University mesoscale model has been applied to Winter Monsoon Experiment data in order to simulate the diurnally occurring convection observed over the South China Sea.
Abstract: Abstract A two-dimensional version of the Pennsylvania State University mesoscale model has been applied to Winter Monsoon Experiment data in order to simulate the diurnally occurring convection observed over the South China Sea. The domain includes a representation of part of Borneo as well as the sea so that the model can simulate the initiation of convection. Also included in the model are parameterizations of mesoscale ice phase and moisture processes and longwave and shortwave radiation with a diurnal cycle. This allows use of the model to test the relative importance of various heating mechanisms to the stratiform cloud deck, which typically occupies several hundred kilometers of the domain. Frank and Cohen's cumulus parameterization scheme is employed to represent vital unresolved vertical transports in the convective area. The major conclusions are: Ice phase processes are important in determining the level of maximum large-scale heating and vertical motion because there is a strong anvil componen...

TL;DR: The progress in the research and development of CQDs is reviewed with an emphasis on their synthesis, functionalization and technical applications along with some discussion on challenges and perspectives in this exciting and promising field.
Abstract: Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles or carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a new class of carbon nanomaterials that have emerged recently and have garnered much interest as potential competitors to conventional semiconductor quantum dots. In addition to their comparable optical properties, CQDs have the desired advantages of low toxicity, environmental friendliness low cost and simple synthetic routes. Moreover, surface passivation and functionalization of CQDs allow for the control of their physicochemical properties. Since their discovery, CQDs have found many applications in the fields of chemical sensing, biosensing, bioimaging, nanomedicine, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. This article reviews the progress in the research and development of CQDs with an emphasis on their synthesis, functionalization and technical applications along with some discussion on challenges and perspectives in this exciting and promising field.
