The need to develop inexpensive renewable energy sources stimulates scientific research for efficient, low-cost photovoltaic devices.1 The organic, polymer-based photovoltaic elements have introduced at least the potential of obtaining cheap and easy methods to produce energy from light.2 The possibility of chemically manipulating the material properties of polymers (plastics) combined with a variety of easy and cheap processing techniques has made polymer-based materials present in almost every aspect of modern society.3 Organic semiconductors have several advantages: (a) lowcost synthesis, and (b) easy manufacture of thin film devices by vacuum evaporation/sublimation or solution cast or printing technologies. Furthermore, organic semiconductor thin films may show high absorption coefficients4 exceeding 105 cm-1, which makes them good chromophores for optoelectronic applications. The electronic band gap of organic semiconductors can be engineered by chemical synthesis for simple color changing of light emitting diodes (LEDs).5 Charge carrier mobilities as high as 10 cm2/V‚s6 made them competitive with amorphous silicon.7 This review is organized as follows. In the first part, we will give a general introduction to the materials, production techniques, working principles, critical parameters, and stability of the organic solar cells. In the second part, we will focus on conjugated polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells, mainly on polyphenylenevinylene (PPV) derivatives/(1-(3-methoxycarbonyl) propyl-1-phenyl[6,6]C61) (PCBM) fullerene derivatives and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/PCBM systems. In the third part, we will discuss the alternative approaches such as polymer/polymer solar cells and organic/inorganic hybrid solar cells. In the fourth part, we will suggest possible routes for further improvements and finish with some conclusions. The different papers mentioned in the text have been chosen for didactical purposes and cannot reflect the chronology of the research field nor have a claim of completeness. The further interested reader is referred to the vast amount of quality papers published in this field during the past decade.

Conjugated polymer-based organic solar cells

Research in the use of organic polymers as the active semiconductors in light-emitting diodes has advanced rapidly, and prototype devices now meet realistic specifications for applications. These achievements have provided insight into many aspects of the background science, from design and synthesis of materials, through materials fabrication issues, to the semiconductor physics of these polymers.

Electroluminescence in conjugated polymers

This Review summarizes recent progress in the development of polymer solar cells. It covers the scientific origins and basic properties of polymer solar cell technology, material requirements and device operation mechanisms, while also providing a synopsis of major achievements in the field over the past few years. Potential future developments and the applications of this technology are also briefly discussed.

Polymer solar cells

We describe the performance of an organic light-emitting device employing the green electrophosphorescent material, fac tris(2-phenylpyridine) iridium [Ir(ppy)3] doped into a 4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazole-biphenyl host. These devices exhibit peak external quantum and power efficiencies of 8.0% (28 cd/A) and 31 lm/W, respectively. At 100 cd/m2, the external quantum and power efficiencies are 7.5% (26 cd/A) and 19 lm/W at an operating voltage of 4.3 V. This performance can be explained by efficient transfer of both singlet and triplet excited states in the host to Ir(ppy)3, leading to a high internal efficiency. In addition, the short phosphorescent decay time of Ir(ppy)3 (<1 μs) reduces saturation of the phosphor at high drive currents, yielding a peak luminance of 100 000 cd/m2.

Very high-efficiency green organic light-emitting devices based on electrophosphorescence

In this review, we discuss the physics underlying the operation of single and multiple heterojunction, vacuum-deposited organic solar cells based on small molecular weight thin films. For single heterojunction cells, we find that the need for direct contact between the deposited electrode and the active organics leads to quenching of excitons. An improved device architecture, the double heterojunction, is shown to confine excitons within the active layers, allowing substantially higher internal efficiencies to be achieved. A full optical and electrical analysis of the double heterostructure architecture leads to optimal cell design as a function of the optical properties and exciton diffusion lengths of the photoactive materials. Combining the double heterostructure with novel light trapping schemes, devices with external efficiencies approaching their internal efficiency are obtained. Small molecular weight organic thin-film photodetectors and solar cells

A bilayer is used as an electrode for organic electroluminescent devices The bilayer consists of an ultrathin LiF layer adjacent to an electron-transporting layer and an aluminum outerlayer Devices with the bilayer electrode showed enhanced electron injection and high electroluminescence efficiency as compared with a Mg09Ag01 cathode Similar effects were observed when replacing MgO for LiF The improvements are attributed to band bending of the organic layer in contact with the dielectrics

Enhanced electron injection in organic electroluminescence devices using an Al/LiF electrode

The influence of oxidative and reductive treatments of indium–tin–oxide (ITO) on the performance of electroluminescent devices is presented. The improvement in device performance is correlated with the surface chemical composition and work function. The work function is shown to be largely determined by the surface oxygen concentration. Oxygen-glow discharge or ultraviolet–ozone treatments increase the surface oxygen concentration and work function in a strongly correlated manner. High temperature, vacuum annealing reduces both the surface oxygen and work function. With oxidation the occupied, density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level is also greatly reduced. This process is reversible by vacuum annealing and it appears that the oxygen concentration, work function, and DOS can be cycled by repeated oxygen treatments and annealing. These observations are interpreted in terms of the well-known, bulk properties of ITO.

Characterization of treated indium-tin-oxide surfaces used in electroluminescent devices

An Efficient Pure Blue Organic Light-Emitting Device with Low Driving Voltages

Surface-emitting organic light emitting diode (OLED) was prepared by sputter deposition of indium-tin-oxide on a buffered organic layer structure. Confirming a previous report, a thin film of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) was found to be a useful buffer layer in preventing sputter damage to the OLED layer structure, particularly the underlying Alq emissive layer. However, the CuPc layer forms an electron-injection barrier with the Alq layer, resulting in increased electron-hole recombination in the nonemissive CuPc layer, and thus a substantial reduction in electroluminescence efficiency. Incorporation of Li at the CuPc/Alq interface was found to reduce the injection barrier at the interface and recover the overall device efficiency with good surface emission characteristics.
