TL;DR: A method combining the use of discrete shearlet transform and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) is presented to classify surface defects of hot-rolled steel strips into the six classes of rolled-in scale, patches, crazing, pitted surface, inclusion and scratches.
Abstract: In this paper, a method combining the use of discrete shearlet transform (DST) and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) is presented to classify surface defects of hot-rolled steel strips into the six classes of rolled-in scale, patches, crazing, pitted surface, inclusion and scratches. Feature extraction involves the extraction of multi-directional shearlet features from each input image followed by GLCM calculations from all extracted sub-bands, from which a set of statistical features is extracted. The resultant high-dimensional feature vectors are then reduced using principal component analysis. A supervised support vector machine classifier is finally trained to classify the surface defects. The proposed feature set is compared against the Gabor, wavelets and the original GLCM in order to evaluate and validate its robustness. Experiments were conducted on a database of hot-rolled steel strips consisting of 1800 grayscale images whose defects exhibit high inter-class similarity as well as high intra-class appearance variations. Results indicate that the proposed DST–GLCM method is superior to other methods and achieves classification rates of 96.00%.

TL;DR: An extended version of LBP which is called BackGround LBP (BGLBP) is presented and it is designed for the background extraction application but it is extendable to the other areas as a texture descriptor.
Abstract: Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is invariant to the monotonic changes in the grey scale domain. This property enables LBP to present a texture descriptor being useful in applications dealing with the local illumination changes. However, the existing versions of LBP are not able to handle image illumination changes, especially in outdoor environments. The non-patterned illumination changes disturb performance of the background extraction methods. In this paper, an extended version of LBP which is called BackGround LBP (BGLBP) is presented. BGLBP is designed for the background extraction application but it is extendable to the other areas as a texture descriptor. BGLBP is an extension of D-LBP, Centre-Symmetric LBP, ULBP, and R-LBP and it has been designed to inherit the positive properties of previous versions. The performance of BGLBP as a part of background extraction method is investigated. In addition, a comparison between BGLBP as a general texture descriptor and a number of LBP versions is conducted.

TL;DR: In this article a shadow detection method using both color and edge information is presented and a new formula is used in the denominator of original c1 c2 c3 in addition using the hue difference of foreground and background is proposed.
Abstract: Shadows appear in many scenes. Human can easily distinguish shadows from objects, but it is one of the challenges for shadow detection intelligent automated systems. Accurate shadow detection can be difficult due to the illumination variations of the background and similarity between appearance of the objects and the background. Color and edge information are two popular features that have been used to distinguish cast shadows from objects. However, this become a problem when the difference of color information between object, shadow and background is poor, the edge of the shadow area is not clear and the shadow detection method is supposed to use only color or edge information method. In this article a shadow detection method using both color and edge information is presented. In order to improve the accuracy of shadow detection using color information, a new formula is used in the denominator of original c1 c2 c3. In addition using the hue difference of foreground and background is proposed. Furthermore, edge information is applied separately and the results are combined using a Boolean operator.

TL;DR: Experiments show that classification accuracies for mood categories outperform genres and the Part-of-Speech feature is utilizes for classification of a collection of 600 songs.
Abstract: Musical genre and mood classification techniques combining lyric and audio features for Music Information Retrieval (MIR) have been studied widely in recent years. This paper investigates the performances of musical genre and mood classification using only lyric features. In this preliminary study, the Part-of-Speech (POS) feature is utilizes for classification of a collection of 600 songs. Ten musical genre and mood categories were selected respectively based on a summary from the literature. Experiments show that classification accuracies for mood categories outperform genres.

TL;DR: This paper presents the common filters that based on some form of low-pass spatial smoothing filters such as Mean, Gaussian, and Median, and the Laplacian filter was used as a high-pass sharpening filter for 2D-echocardiography.
Abstract: Echocardiography imaging is one of the most common diagnostic tests that are widely used for assessing the abnormalities of the regional heart ventricle function. The main goal of the image enhancement task in 2D-echocardiography (2DE) is to solve two major anatomical structure problems; speckle noise and low quality. Therefore, speckle noise reduction is one of the important steps that used as a pre-processing to reduce the distortion effects in 2DE image segmentation. In this paper, we present the common filters that based on some form of low-pass spatial smoothing filters such as Mean, Gaussian, and Median. The Laplacian filter was used as a high-pass sharpening filter. A comparative analysis was presented to test the effectiveness of these filters after being applied to original 2DE images of 4-chamber and 2-chamber views. Three statistical quantity measures: root mean square error (RMSE), peak signal-to-ratio (PSNR) and signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) are used to evaluate the filter performance quantitatively on the output enhanced image. Keywords—Gaussian operator, median filter, speckle texture, peak signal-to-ratio

TL;DR: A controlled multimodal dataset consisting of temporally synchronized and geometrically calibrated data from an optical motion capture system, multi-baseline stereo cameras from multiple views, depth sensors, accelerometers and microphones, provides researchers an inclusive testbed to develop and benchmark new algorithms across multiple modalities under known capture conditions in various research domains.
Abstract: Over the years, a large number of methods have been proposed to analyze human pose and motion information from images, videos, and recently from depth data. Most methods, however, have been evaluated on datasets that were too specific to each application, limited to a particular modality, and more importantly, captured under unknown conditions. To address these issues, we introduce the Berkeley Multimodal Human Action Database (MHAD) consisting of temporally synchronized and geometrically calibrated data from an optical motion capture system, multi-baseline stereo cameras from multiple views, depth sensors, accelerometers and microphones. This controlled multimodal dataset provides researchers an inclusive testbed to develop and benchmark new algorithms across multiple modalities under known capture conditions in various research domains. To demonstrate possible use of MHAD for action recognition, we compare results using the popular Bag-of-Words algorithm adapted to each modality independently with the results of various combinations of modalities using the Multiple Kernel Learning. Our comparative results show that multimodal analysis of human motion yields better action recognition rates than unimodal analysis.

Abstract: Automated computer-vision-based defect detection has received much attention with the increasing surface quality assurance demands for the industrial manufacturing of flat steels. This article attempts to present a comprehensive survey on surface defect detection technologies by reviewing about 120 publications over the last two decades for three typical flat steel products of con-casting slabs and hot- and cold-rolled steel strips. According to the nature of algorithms as well as image features, the existing methodologies are categorized into four groups: statistical, spectral, model-based, and machine learning. These works are summarized in this review to enable easy referral to suitable methods for diverse application scenarios in steel mills. Realization recommendations and future research trends are also addressed at an abstract level.
