Citation studies and analyses of usage statistics are two approaches academic librarians take to determine if their journal collections support the needs of research faculty. Librarians at a small, regional liberal arts university compiled a list of faculty journal publications covering a thirteen-year span from four academic departments—nursing, chemistry, biology, and mathematics—and, from these publications, generated a list of the journals that were cited. As expected, this university’s faculty members publish in many of the same journals that they cite. However, faculty members cite a wide range of sources. Wiley journal usage statistics were examined from 2011 and 2012 to determine if the number of PDF downloads of articles in the published in and cited Wiley journals were higher than the average numbers of PDF downloads of Wiley journals. Combining an analysis of usage statistics with citation analysis provides a more strategic way to look at a Big Deal package. This information is of interest to the departments represented and other stakeholders, and the implications for collection development purposes are addressed.

A Hybrid Model for Managing Standard Usage Data: Principles for e-Resource Statistics Workflows

This paper presents the results of a study on the open archives in developing countries. It provides the elements of type, size and contents of open archives. The methodology is based on information collected from open repository websites. The survey is based on an almost exhaustive sample list of developing countries websites retrieved from directories and a list of open repositories. The purpose of this study, carried out from 2011 up to now, is to measure, at a second level, the impact of open access on the Algerian researchers by analyzing their practices related to open access, through the identification of their scientific publications at a second level in the open archives, in which they can deposit.

Librarians collect many different types of statistics related to the use of electronic resources, however, effectively managing usage data remains an ongoing challenge. Wisconsin academic librarians who work closely with electronic resources were surveyed and interviewed in order to understand what statistics these librarians currently collect. What tools and measures are used and for what purpose? What do these librarians consider best practices? New tools have been developed that help manage electronic resource statistics but questions remain. How do libraries value and prioritize uses of statistics that they collect? Is it possible to analyze statistics to paint a compelling picture in order to justify collection development decisions or planning? Lastly, how can we begin to assess how successfully we use statistics for various purposes? The findings will contribute to the discussion about how to manage electronic resource usage statistics effectively.

Linda Hulbert and Dani Roach described the methodology and systems used at the University of St. Thomas Libraries to analyze usage statistics for both print and electronic resources in order to support collection development decisions. They discussed how the usage statistics are collected, how cost-per-use is calculated, and how standards development will facilitate these processes. Roles of subject liaisons and the collection development committee in the decision-making process are examined.
