A unified view of metaheuristics This book provides a complete background on metaheuristics and shows readers how to design and implement efficient algorithms to solve complex optimization problems across a diverse range of applications, from networking and bioinformatics to engineering design, routing, and scheduling. It presents the main design questions for all families of metaheuristics and clearly illustrates how to implement the algorithms under a software framework to reuse both the design and code. Metaheuristics: From Design to Implementation

The Globus Toolkit (GT) has been developed since the late 1990s to support the development of service-oriented distributed computing applications and infrastructures. Core GT components address, within a common framework, basic issues relating to security, resource access, resource management, data movement, resource discovery, and so forth. These components enable a broader “Globus ecosystem” of tools and components that build on, or interoperate with, core GT functionality to provide a wide range of useful application-level functions. These tools have in turn been used to develop a wide range of both “Grid” infrastructures and distributed applications. I summarize here the principal characteristics of the latest release, the Web services-based GT4, which provides significant improvements over previous releases in terms of robustness, performance, usability, documentation, standards compliance, and functionality.

Globus toolkit version 4: software for service-oriented systems

Biology is an information-driven science. Large-scale data sets from genomics, physiology, population genetics and imaging are driving research at a dizzying rate. Simultaneously, interdisciplinary collaborations among experimental biologists, theorists, statisticians and computer scientists have become the key to making effective use of these data sets. However, too many biologists have trouble accessing and using these electronic data sets and tools effectively. A 'cyberinfrastructure' is a combination of databases, network protocols and computational services that brings people, information and computational tools together to perform science in this information-driven world. This article reviews the components of a biological cyberinfrastructure, discusses current and pending implementations, and notes the many challenges that lie ahead.

Towards a cyberinfrastructure for the biological sciences: progress, visions and challenges

This tutorial introduces the concepts and technologies needed to build projector-based display systems. Tiled displays offer scalability, high resolution, and large formats for various applications. Tiled displays are an emerging technology for constructing semi-immersive visualization environments capable of presenting high-resolution images from scientific simulation. The largest impact may well arise from using large-format tiled displays as one of possibly multiple displays in building information or active spaces that surround the user with diverse ways of interacting with data and multimedia information flows. These environments may prove the ultimate successor to the desktop metaphor for information technology work. Several fundamental technological problems must be addressed to make tiled displays practical. These include: the choice of screen materials and support structures; choice of projectors, projector supports, and optional fine positioners; techniques for integrating image tiles into a seamless whole; interface devices for interaction with applications; display generators and interfaces; and the display software environment.

Globus® Toolkit 4, First Edition: Programming Java Services (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking)

The Globus Toolkit 4 (GT4), first and foremost, includes several high-level services for building Grid systems. The toolkit also includes an implementation of WSRF (Web Services Resource Framework), on which many of the GT4 services are built. This chapter presents a brief overview of GT4. The Globus Toolkit 4 is an open source toolkit organized as a collection of loosely coupled components. These components consist of services, programming libraries, and development tools designed for building Grid-based applications. GT components fall into five broad domain areas: security, data management, execution management, information services, and common runtime. This book highlights Java WS Core (a part of the Java Runtime) and some of the security components. Once again, it is important to realize that the Globus Toolkit includes many other services and libraries designed to help build Grids. The figures in the chapter provide a service-centric view of GT4, with WS components shown on the left and non-WS components on the right. All the Globus-supplied WS components (such as GRAM, RFT) are implemented on top of Java WS Core. Nonetheless, the toolkit also allows one to develop one's services using Python or C using the Python WS Core and C WS Core components, respectively.

The Futures Lab group at Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago are designing, building, and evaluating a new type of interactive computing environment that couples in a deep way the concepts of direct manipulation found in virtual reality with the richness and variety of interactive devices found in ubiquitous computing. This environment provides the interactivity and collaboration support of teleimmersive environments with the flexibility and availability of desktop collaboration tools. We call these environments ActiveSpaces. An ActiveSpace is a physical domain that has been augmented with multiscale multi-screen displays, environment-specific and device-specific sensors, body and object trackers, human-input and instrument-input interfaces, streaming audio and video capture devices, and force feedback devices—and has then been connected to other such spaces via the Grid.
