FIRE Arctic Clouds Experiment
Judith A. Curry,Peter V. Hobbs,Michael D. King,David A. Randall,Patrick Minnis,George A. Isaac,James O. Pinto,Taneil Uttal,Anthony Bucholtz,Douglas G. Cripe,H. Gerber,Christopher W. Fairall,Timothy J. Garrett,James G. Hudson,Janet M. Intrieri,Christian Jakob,Tommy G. Jensen,Paul Lawson,D. Marcotte,Louis Nguyen,Peter Pilewskie,Arthur L. Rangno,D. C. Rogers,K. B. Strawbridge,Francisco P. J. Valero,Alastair G. Williams,Donald P. Wylie +26 more
TL;DR: The First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) Arctic Clouds Experiment was conducted in the Arctic during April through July, 1998 as mentioned in this paper, and the primary goal of the field experiment was to gather the data needed to examine the impact of arctic clouds on the radiation exchange between the surface, atmosphere, and space, and to study how the surface influences the evolution of boundary layer clouds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transformation of contrails into cirrus during SUCCESS
Patrick Minnis,David F. Young,Donald P. Garber,Louis Nguyen,William L. Smith,Rabindra Palikonda +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a geostationary satellite data to document the conversion of the contrails to cirrus clouds was analyzed with geospatial satellite data and two unique contrails, a pair of figure eights and a NASA DC-8 oval, were tracked for more than 7 hours.
Journal ArticleDOI
CERES Edition-2 Cloud Property Retrievals Using TRMM VIRS and Terra and Aqua MODIS Data—Part II: Examples of Average Results and Comparisons With Other Data
Patrick Minnis,S. Sun-Mack,Yan Chen,Mandana M. Khaiyer,Yuhong Yi,J. K. Ayers,R. R. Brown,Xiquan Dong,Sharon Gibson,Patrick W. Heck,Bing Lin,Michele L. Nordeen,Louis Nguyen,Rabindra Palikonda,William L. Smith,Douglas A. Spangenberg,Qing Z. Trepte,Baike Xi +17 more
TL;DR: Cloud properties were retrieved by applying the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project Edition-2 algorithms to 3.5 years of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Visible and Infrared Scanner data and 5.5 and 8 years of MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from Aqua and Terra.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Comparison of TWP-ICE Observational Data with Cloud-Resolving Model Results
Ann M. Fridlind,Andrew S. Ackerman,Jean-Pierre Chaboureau,Jiwen Fan,Wojciech W. Grabowski,Adrian R. Hill,Todd R. Jones,Mandana M. Khaiyer,Guosheng Liu,Patrick Minnis,Hugh Morrison,Louis Nguyen,S. Park,S. Park,Jon Petch,Jean-Pierre Pinty,Courtney Schumacher,Ben Shipway,Adam Varble,Xiaoqing Wu,Shaocheng Xie,Minghua Zhang +21 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the TWP-ICE campaign was used to drive and evaluate thirteen cloud-resolving model simulations with periodic lateral boundary conditions, which employed 2D and 3D dynamics, one-and two-moment microphysics, several variations on large-scale forcing, and the use of observationally derived aerosol properties to prognose droplet numbers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid Calibration of Operational and Research Meteorological Satellite Imagers. Part I: Evaluation of Research Satellite Visible Channels as References
Patrick Minnis,Louis Nguyen,David R. Doelling,David F. Young,Walter F. Miller,David P. Kratz +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the use of research satellite imagers that maintain their solar-channel calibrations by using onboard diffuser systems that rely on the sun as an absolute reference.
