The Logic and Limits of Trust

This article advances our understanding of the influence of affect in consumers’ responses to brief, nonpersonal service encounters. This study contributes to the services marketing literature by examining for mundane service transactions the impact of customer-displayed emotion and affect on assessments of the service encounter and the overall experience. Observational and perceptual data from customers were matched with frontline employees in 200 transaction-specific encounters. The results of this study suggest that consumers’ evaluations of the service encounter correlate highly with their displayed emotions during the interaction and postencounter mood states. Finally, the findings indicate that frontline employees’perceptions of the encounter are not aligned with those of their customers. The managerial implications of these findings are briefly discussed.

Practical implications – The recommended research areas are intended to advance the knowledge base to help hotels recover from the COVID-19 pandemic The suggested research streams are expected to provide actionable insights to promote the development and sustainability of the hotel sector
Originality/value – This article appears to be a frontier study, critically examining possible effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on hotel marketing and management practices and how hoteliers may respond to such challenges to recover after this pandemic

Effects of COVID-19 on hotel marketing and management: a perspective article

This article explores recent advances in the design and engineering of materials wholly or principally constructed from peptides. We focus on materials that are able to respond to changes in their environment (pH, ionic strength, temperature, light, oxidation/reduction state, presence of small molecules or the catalytic activity of enzymes) by altering their macromolecular structure. Such peptide-based responsive biomaterials have exciting prospects for a variety of biomedical and bionanotechnology applications in drug delivery, bio-sensing and regenerative medicine.

Purpose




This study aims to investigate the influence of employee positions (supervisor vs line-level employee) on work-related variables (e.g. work engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions).




Design/methodology/approach




Data were collected from line-level employees and supervisors of 29 mid- to up-scale hotels. A series of one-way ANCOVA were performed to test the position differences in work engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the moderating role of employees’ positions on the relationships between those variables.




Findings




Supervisors have significantly higher work engagement and lower turnover intentions than line-level employees, whereas job satisfaction does not differ across positions. Employee positions significantly moderate the relationship between absorption and job satisfaction, and the relationship between dedication and turnover intentions.




Practical implications




This study provides an in-depth analysis for hotel managers to capture work-related factors (i.e. work engagement, job satisfaction and turnover intentions) across employee positions. Dedication is the primary barometer that significantly leads to job satisfaction and reduced turnover intentions compared to vigor and absorption. Although job satisfaction may be boosted by improving employee work engagement (i.e. vigor, dedication and absorption), increasing absorption is not an effective solution to increase supervisors’ job satisfaction. Hotel managers need to carefully monitor supervisors’ levels of dedication, given its focal impact on turnover intentions.




Originality/value




This study is one of the first attempts to examine the differences between line-level employees’ and supervisors’ work engagement (i.e. vigor, dedication and absorption) and its consequences (i.e. job satisfaction and turnover intentions). Findings highlight the unique influence of the individual dimension of work engagement on job satisfaction and turnover intentions. This study reveals the moderating effect of employee positions on the links between engagement dimensions and consequences.

Work engagement, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions: A comparison between supervisors and line-level employees

Self-healing thermoset epoxy based on dynamic covalent bond chemistry has been developed in the past several years, which warrants the creation of recyclable epoxy. However, the existing systems produce epoxy that has lower strength, stiffness, and glass transition temperature, making them unsuitable for load-bearing structures. In this study, we developed a new recyclable thermoset epoxy through solid form recycling. The epoxy has strength, stiffness, and glass transition temperature similar to those found in conventional thermoset epoxy. The effect of healing temperature, healing time, healing pressure, and powder size on the healing efficiency was experimentally investigated. It was found that the healing efficiency is as high as 88.1%, and the epoxy can be recycled more than one time.
