Concurrent tandem catalysis

In this tutorial review recent mechanistic studies on transition metal-catalyzed hydrogen transfer reactions are discussed. A common feature of these reactions is that they involve metal hydrides, which may be monohydrides or dihydrides. An important question is whether the substrate coordinates to the metal (inner-sphere hydrogen transfer) or if there is a direct concerted transfer of hydrogen from the metal to substrate (outer-sphere hydrogen transfer). Both experimental and theoretical studies are reviewed.

Mechanistic aspects of transition metal-catalyzed hydrogen transfer reactions.

Treatment of a stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HAP), Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, with PdCl2(PhCN)2 gives a new type of palladium-grafted hydroxyapatite. Analysis by means of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), IR, and Pd K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) proves that a monomeric PdCl2 species is chemisorbed on the HAP surface, which is readily transformed into Pd nanoclusters with a narrow size distribution in the presence of alcohol. Nanoclustered Pd0 species can effectively promote the alcohol oxidation under an atmospheric O2 pressure, giving a remarkably high turnover number (TON) of up to 236,000 with an excellent turnover frequency (TOF) of approximately 9800 h(-1) for a 250-mmol-scale oxidation of 1-phenylethanol under solvent-free conditions. In addition to advantages such as a simple workup procedure and the ability to recycle the catalyst, the present Pd catalyst does not require additives to complete the catalytic cycle. The diameters of the generated Pd nanoclusters can be controlled upon acting on the alcohol substrates used. Oxidation of alcohols is proposed to occur primarily on low-coordination sites within a regular arrangement of the Pd nanocluster by performing calculations on the palladium crystallites.

Hydroxyapatite-Supported Palladium Nanoclusters: A Highly Active Heterogeneous Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Alcohols by Use of Molecular Oxygen

Oxidation reactions are of fundamental importance in nature, and are key transformations in organic synthesis. The development of new processes that employ transition metals as substrate-selective catalysts and stoichiometric environmentally friendly oxidants, such as molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide, is one of the most important goals in oxidation chemistry. Direct oxidation of the catalyst by molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide is often kinetically unfavored. The use of coupled catalytic systems with electron-transfer mediators (ETMs) usually facilitates the procedures by transporting the electrons from the catalyst to the oxidant along a low-energy pathway, thereby increasing the efficiency of the oxidation and thus complementing the direct oxidation reactions. As a result of the similarities with biological systems, this can be dubbed a biomimetic approach.

Catalytic Oxidation of Organic Substrates by Molecular Oxygen and Hydrogen Peroxide by Multistep Electron Transfer : A Biomimetic Approach

1,4-Benzoquinones have been found to prevent olefin isomerization of a number of allylic ethers and long-chain aliphatic alkenes during ruthenium-catalyzed olefin metathesis reactions. Electron-deficient benzoquinones are the most effective additives for the prevention of olefin migration. This mild, inexpensive, and effective method to block olefin isomerization increases the synthetic utility of olefin metathesis via improvement of overall product yield and purity.
