The Dark Triad personality traits measure: approbation of the Dirty Dozen Questionnaire

The aim of the present study was to verify the relationship of three aversive personality traits - Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy, nowadays known by experts as the Dark Triad and burnout syndrome on the sample of vocational technical subject teachers. The study was carried out on a sample of 241 participants (Mage = 44.53; SD = 10.29). Females represented 75.1% of all respondents (Mage = 44.48; SD = 10.02), males represented the remaining 24.9% of respondents (Mage = 42.36; SD = 11.8). The Slovak version of Short Dark Triad - SD3 and the adapted Slovak version of Maslach Burnout Inventory - HSS on the sample of helping professionals were administered. Significant positive relations of the Dark Triad traits with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal satisfaction were identified. Regression analysis indicated the Dark Triad as a significant predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, psychopathy was the most significant predictor. The Dark Triad concept predicted 58% of burnout syndrome’s variance.

Taking into account the main objective of any organization engaged in retail, sales and provision of services there are high expectations towards the personal skills and professional competence level of a sales manager. The functional responsibilities of a sales manager suggest an ambition to be active, flexible, take responsibility for own decisions, be able to take risks, and make a positive impression on clients. Previous studies revealed that a certain combination of negative personality traits that make up the Dark Triad complex allows to actively attract customers and contributes to closing high-value profitable deals. It was noted that eagerness to achieve professional success, typical for the individuals affected by the Dark Triad complex, allows them to control their behavior and compensate for the complex’s negative manifestations in behavior and communication. This ability is associated with self-monitoring factors. Recent studies have identified certain career benefits available for these individuals. It was suggested that examination of negative personality traits of managers is essential for predicting the results of their professional activities. In the current study, an empirical evaluation of the assumption was made regarding how self-monitoring is associated with negative personality traits among sales managers. It was demonstrated that the distribution of the levels of negative personality traits among sales managers with different self-monitoring levels is not random.

Within the communicative competence of a high school teacher, there are distinguished such skills as an ability to engage pupils in communication and make a favourable impression (self-presentation skill). High school teachers have to be able to demonstrate attractive features of own personality, show themselves as successful professionals. Thus, the requirement to create a positive impression of oneself, to have developed empathy and a high level of self-monitoring is emphasized. As a result of the research, a protective-nature change in the behaviour of middle-aged teachers has been revealed. It is noted that these manifestations in many respects resemble descriptions of the manifestation of negative personality traits included in the construct of the “Dark Triad”. In this study, a theoretical analysis of the current understanding of the concepts of the “Dark Triad” and self-monitoring is provided, as well as an empirical study of the “Dark Triad” negative personality traits relation to self-monitoring among high school teachers. The examined variables refer to personality constructs. The study revealed a statistically significant correlation between self-monitoring and negative personality traits among high school teachers, which is explained theoretically by the manifestations of the characteristic features of the components of negative traits, including high self-monitoring level. Statistically significant correlations between machiavellianism and self-monitoring, as well as between narcissism, psychopathy, and self-monitoring were revealed. The study reveals a tendency to high levels of expression of all three “Dark Triad” personality traits as well as of self-monitoring, which is explained by the age peculiarities and specifics of high school teachers’ professional activity.

The main purpose of the activities of security service employees is to ensure security and the rule of law. Therefore, one of their professional requirements is the ability to identify elements of nonverbal behaviour that indicate a potential threat to public safety. Paying attention to face expressions can be a basis for potentially threatening intentions recognition. It has been proved that the ability to recognize emotions can be evolved by professional experience related to profiling as well as positive interpersonal communication shaping attitude towards people. In the professional field being studied, there is a contradiction between the requirements assigned to security staff and peculiarities of their professional activities that adversely affect certain characteristics of a person. The study provides a theoretical analysis of contemporary understanding of emotions recognition from photographs as well as of the professional activities impact on altering personality traits. It also provides an empirical exploration of links between the ability to recognize emotions from photographs and such personality characteristics as hostility and trust in people among security officers with different length of work experience. The study revealed that with the increase in time of being employed in a security service, the employees demonstrate tendencies to have increased suspiciousness, nihilism and hostility towards others and reduced ability to recognize face expressions.
