Journal ArticleDOI

X-ray Tomographic Study of Chemical Vapor Infiltration Processing of Ceramic Composites

TL;DR: Noninvasive, high-resolution methods of x-ray tomography have been used to measure the growth of silicon carbide in a woven Nicalon-fiber composite during chemical vapor infiltration, indicating that this surface area is independent of the fiber architecture and location within the preform and is dominated by large-scale macroporosity during the final stages of composite consolidation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pore geometry in woven fiber structures: 0°/90° plain-weave cloth layup preform

TL;DR: In this article, the structure of a 0°/90° cloth layup preform using x-ray tomographic microscopy (XTM) was characterized. But the authors focused on the geometry of the interfiber porosity.
Journal ArticleDOI

X-Ray Tomographic Microscopy of Nicalon Preforms and Chemical Vapor Infiltrated Nicalon/Silicon Carbide Composites

TL;DR: In this paper, a very high resolution computed tomography (XTM) is used to image the microstructure of macroscopic volumes of a composite to be imaged with resolution approaching one micrometer.
