Overhead transmission lines are vulnerable to aeolian vibrations that threaten the operation of the power grid. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based self‐powered system offers a desirable way for vibration online‐monitoring with potential for large‐scale deployment. In this work, a self‐powered sensor network constructed by active vibration sensor (AVS) units with a spring‐mass based TENG (S‐TENG) is reported for effective energy harvesting and broadband vibration sensing. The basic TENG with structural parameters is first discussed from the aspects of efficiency and response characteristics, then the spring constant and mass weight are also adjusted for S‐TENGs with different optimal operation regions, thus the overall vibration amplitude and frequency response are further enhanced by the mutual compensation of S‐TENGs with a weight allocation strategy. Furthermore, the S‐TENGs are combined with external circuits to compose the AVS units, which are deployed in a distributed manner on a simulated transmission line to demonstrate a self‐powered wireless warning system and an aeolian vibration mapping system, enabling abnormal vibration warnings and vibration distribution monitoring over the whole line. This work represents a novel strategy for utilizing TENG technology for transmission line aeolian vibration monitoring and provides valuable guidance for further sensor network construction and power grid visualization.

Analytical and experimental investigation of overhead transmission line vibration

The present paper deals with the nonlinear dynamics of a Stockbridge damper. The nonlinearity is from damping and the geometric stretching of the messenger. The Stockbridge damper is modeled as two cantilevered beams with tip masses. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton’s principle. The model is valid for both symmetric and asymmetric Stockbridge dampers. Explicit expressions are presented for the frequency equation, mode shapes, nonlinear frequency, and modulation equations. Forced Vibration of Overhead Transmission Line: Analytical and Experimental Investigation

A novel algorithm is developed in this paper for analyzing Aeolian vibration of a span of a single conductor with multiple dampers. The algorithm is characterized by a combination of an impedance transfer technique (ITT) and a forced vibration method (FVM). The ITT avoids singularities that may occur due to a conductor's very low bending stiffness with respect to its tension. On the other hand, the FVM can easily handle non-proportional damping (which is typical for the problem in concern) without having to solve a complex eigenvalue problem. In addition, the algorithm can easily accommodate a conductor's terminal flexibility as well as a damper's rotational effect that may exist due to its possible asymmetry. The algorithm is very efficient so that solution is almost instantaneous for most analysis problems. The algorithm has recently been implemented into a commercial Aeolian vibration analysis and design software-EPRI Vibration version 3.0.
