Ultrasonic guided wave inspection is expanding rapidly to many different areas of manufacturing and in-service inspection. The purpose of this paper is to provide a vision of ultrasonic guided wave inspection potential aswe move forward into the new millennium. An increased understanding of the basic physics and wave mechanics associated with guided wave inspection has led to an increase in practical nondestructive evaluation and inspection problems. Some fundamental concepts and a number of different applications that are currently being considered will be presented in the paper along with a brief description of the sensor and software technology that will make ultrasonic guided wave inspection commonplace in the next century.

A Baseline and Vision of Ultrasonic Guided Wave Inspection Potential

The elastic constants of single‐crystal NbN, VN, and TiN films were determined from surface acoustic wave (SAW) dispersion curves obtained by the use of an acoustic microscope with a line‐focus beam. Measurements were carried out for single‐crystal nitride films grown on the (001) plane of single‐crystal cubic‐symmetric MgO substrates. The phase velocities measured as functions of the angle of propagation display the expected anisotropy. Dispersion curves of SAWs propagating along the symmetry axes were obtained by measuring the wave velocities for various film thicknesses and frequencies. Using a modified simplex method, an inversion of the SAW dispersion data yielded the elastic constants of cubic symmetry, namely c11, c12, and c44. The Rayleigh surface wave velocities calculated from the determined elastic constants and known mass densities agree well with a result measured by Brillouin scattering spectroscopy reported elsewhere.

Existing ultrasound devices for assessing the human tibia are based on detecting the first arriving signal, corresponding to a wave propagating at, or close to, the bulk longitudinal velocity in bone. However, human long bones are effectively irregular hollow tubes and should theoretically support the propagation of more complex guided modes similar to Lamb waves in plates. Guided waves are attractive because they propagate throughout the bone thickness and can potentially yield more information on bone material properties and architecture. In this study, Lamb wave theory and numerical simulations of wave propagation were used to gain insights into the expected behaviour of guided waves in bone. Experimental measurements in acrylic plates, using a prototype low-frequency axial pulse transmission device, confirmed the presence of two distinct propagating waves: the first arriving wave propagating at, or close to, the longitudinal velocity, and a slower second wave whose behaviour was consistent with the lowest order Lamb antisymmetrical (A0) mode. In a pilot study of healthy and osteoporotic subjects, the velocity of the second wave differed significantly between the two groups, whereas the first arriving wave velocity did not, suggesting the former to be a more sensitive indicator of osteoporosis. We conclude that guided wave measurements may offer an enhanced approach to the ultrasonic characterization of long bones.

Guided ultrasonic waves in long bones: modelling, experiment and in vivo application

Recent progress in quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has shown increasing interest toward measuring long bones by ultrasonic guided waves. This technology is widely used in the field of nondestructive testing and evaluation of different waveguide structures. Cortical bone provides such an elastic waveguide and its ability to sustain loading and resist fractures is known to be related to its mechanical properties at different length scales. Because guided waves could yield diverse characterizations of the bone's mechanical properties at the macroscopic level, the method of guided waves has a strong potential over the standardized bone densitometry as a tool for bone assessment. Despite this, development of guided wave methods is challenging, e.g., due to interferences and rnultiparametric inversion problems. This paper discusses the promises and challenges related to bone characterization by ultrasonic guided waves.

Ultrasonic guided waves in bone

A numerical procedure is presented for the inversion of leaky Lamb wave (LLW) data to determine certain material properties of a waveguide, using a modified version of the simplex algorithm. The technique is capable of computing the parameter values that best fit a particular set of data, given an analytical model of the associated phenomenon containing any number of variables and parameters. The basic theoretical concepts involved are reviewed, and the versatility and simplicity of the method are illustrated by examples. The inversion scheme is used to estimate the elastic properties and thickness of an adhesive layer between two aluminum plates and the elastic constants of a unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite laminate. The limitations of the LLW data in the determination of the elastic constants of a composite are discussed.

Inversion of leaky Lamb wave data by simplex algorithm

The feasibility of using a recently developed ultrasonic technique to determine certain macroscopic properties of the interface zones of composite laminates is studied. The strong influence of the elastic properties and the thickness of the interface zone on the phase velocity of guided waves is demonstrated by means of a simple model of a single fiber embedded in a layer of the matrix material. The overall dynamic elastic moduli of a unidirectional graphite-epoxy composite laminate are determined through inversion of guided wave dispersion data obtained by the leaky Lamb wave experiment. The thickness and elastic properties of the interlaminar interface zone in a cross-ply graphite-epoxy laminate are also estimated by the same approach.
