Publisher Summary The study of direct-contact heat and mass transfer to liquid droplets (dispersed phase) moving in a fluid medium (continuous phase) is of interest because the transfer rates with direct-contact systems are usually much higher than those with surface-type exchangers. This is due to the availability of a larger surface area for a given volume. Direct-contact transfer processes with moving liquid droplets may or may not involve phase change at the drop surface. Furthermore, the process may involve single- or multi component systems. This chapter is concerned primarily with analytical or numerical studies of direct contact transfer phenomena, rather than the experimental aspects or the specifics of the design of direct-contact transfer systems. The main emphasis throughout is on convective flow effects. Recent studies related to direct-contact heat and mass transfer processes with moving liquid droplets are reviewed. Finally, the chapter concludes that, analytical or numerical studies of compound drops are at the initial stages. Very extensive studies are needed in this important area.
