A Wordnet from the ground up

The Polish Wordnet, plWordNet, has been in steady development for five years. We are building it from scratch, all the time making provisions for its general compatibility with the other major wordnets. We are very close to reaching a milestone of 100000 lexical units in 70000 synsets. In addition to a fairly comprehensive coverage of common nouns, there already is in plWordNet a significantly built-up verb component, and a similarly enlarged adjective component is under construction. We present the background, the assumptions, the relation set (essential for any wordnet, and central for our inflectionand derivation-rich language) and the current state of the project, and we map the near future.

Approaching plWordNet 2.0

A Polish WordNet has been under construction for two years. We discuss the organisation of the project, the fundamental assumptions, the tools and the resources. We show how our work di ers from that done on EuroWordNet and BalkaNet. In a year we expect the network to reach 20000 lexical units. Some 12000 entries will have been completed by hand. Work on others will be automated as far as possible; to that end, we have developed statistics-based semantic similarity functions and methods based on a form of chunking. The preliminary results show that at least semi-automated acquisition of relations is feasible, so that the lexicographers' work may be reduced to revision and approval. 1 Organisation of the project Ever since the initial burst of popularity of the original WordNet [1, 2], there has been little doubt how useful wordnets are in Natural Language Processing. For those who work with a language that lacks a wordnet, the question is not whether, but how and how fast to construct such a lexical resource. The construction is costly, with the bulk of the cost due to the high linguistic workload. This appears to have been the case, in particular, in two multinational wordnetbuilding projects, EuroWordNet [3] and BalkaNet [4]. The recent developments in automatic acquisition of lexical-semantic relations suggest that the cost might be reduced. Our project to construct a Polish WordNet (plWordNet) explores this path as a supplement to a well-organized and well-supported e ort of a team of linguists/lexicographers. The three-year project started in November 2005. The Polish Ministry of Education and Science funds it with a very modest ca. 65000 euro (net). Words, Concepts and Relations in the Construction of Polish WordNet

We have released plWordNet 3.0, a very large wordnet for Polish. In addition to what is expected in wordnets – richly interrelated synsets – it contains sentiment and emotion annotations, a large set of multi-word expressions, and a mapping onto WordNet 3.1. Part of the release is enWordNet 1.0, a substantially enlarged copy of WordNet 3.1, with material added to allow for a more complete mapping. The paper discusses the design principles of plWordNet, its content, its statistical portrait, a comparison with similar resources, and a partial list of applications.

plWordNet 3.0 - a Comprehensive Lexical-Semantic Resource.

We present a strategy and the early results of the mapping of plWordNet ‐ one of the largest such language resources in existence ‐ onto Princeton Wo rdNet. The fundamental structural premise of plWordNet differs from those of most other wordnets: lexical units rather than synsets are the basic building blocks. The addition of new material to plWordNet is consistently informed by semantic relations and by various analyses of large corpora. The mapping is difficult because of the subtly distinct structures and because of WordN et’s focus on synsets. We have designed a set of inter-lingual semantic relations and an effectiv e mapping procedure. In the course of mapping, we have discovered a range of systematic difference s between plWordNet and WordNet, and proposed ways of accounting for such differences.
