Applications of artificial neural networks for thermal analysis of heat exchangers – A review

Traditionally 4xxx casting alloys are used for the additive manufacturing of structurally optimised lightweight parts in space, aerospace and automotive. However, for such applications there is a need for hardenable high-strength Al-alloys exceeding the properties of the 4xxx alloys family. The study analyses the hardness response of different heat treatment temperatures and hold durations applied to a Sc- and Zr-modified Al-Mg (5xxx-) alloy (Scalmalloy®) processed by Selective Laser Melting, and compares the mechanical properties and microstructure in the as-processed and annealed condition, and these properties are clearly related to the very fine grained microstructure. The results show that the static mechanical properties are exceptionally good with R m -values exceeding 500 MPa along with almost no build-orientation related anisotropic effects, and a high ductility even in the heat treated condition. These properties are clearly related to the very fine grained material, along with the good hardenability of the alloy. The stress-strain curves show the typical Portevin-Le-Chatelier (PLC) effect as known for other 5xxx alloys. Due to significant grain boundary pinning by different particles the very fine-grained bi-modal microstructure originating from the SLM-process can be maintained even in the heat treated condition, and only a HIP treatment leads to local grain growth only in coarser grained regions.

This paper presents a review of research progress on aluminum–steel dissimilar welding. Current issues and recent developments in improving the intermetallic compound layer of weld joint are critically assessed. Several welding factors that improve joint quality, such as welding method, weld and material preparations, as well as welding parameters, are also discussed. This study also examines recent developments in hybrid welding techniques and proposes a preheating method to enhance the weld joints of aluminum–steel dissimilar welding.

Review of Research Progress on Aluminum–Steel Dissimilar Welding

The effects of input heat of different welding processes on the microstructure, corrosion, and mechanical characteristics of welded duplex stainless steel (DSS) are reviewed. Austenitic stainless steel (ASS) is welded using low-heat inputs. However, owing to differences in the physical metallurgy between ASS and DSS, low-heat inputs should be avoided for DSS. This review highlights the differences in solidification mode and transformation characteristics between ASS and DSS with regard to the heat input in welding processes. Specifically, many studies about the effects of heat energy input in welding process on the pitting corrosion, intergranular stress, stresscorrosion cracking, and mechanical properties of weldments of DSS are reviewed.

Effects of Heat Input on Microstructure, Corrosion and Mechanical Characteristics of Welded Austenitic and Duplex Stainless Steels: A Review

The heat exchangers have a widespread use in industrial, transportation as well as domestic applications such as thermal power plants, means of transport, air conditioning and heating systems, electronic equipment and space vehicles. The key objectives of this article are to provide an overview of the published works that are relevant to the tube banks heat exchangers. A review of available and display that the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the heat exchanger rely on many parameters. Such parameters as follows: external fluid velocity, tube configuration (in-line/staggered, series), tubes rows, tube spacing, fin spacing, shape of tubes, etc. The review also shows the finned and un-finned tube configurations heat exchangers. The important correlations for thermofluids in tube banks heat exchangers also discussed. The optimum spacing of tube-to-tube and fin-to-fin with fixed size (i.e., area, volume) with the maximum overall heat conductance (heat transfer rate) were summarized in this review. In addition, the few studies show the effect of tube diameter in a circular shape compared with elliptic tube shape. Overall, the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop increases with increasing fluid velocity regardless the arrangement and shape of the tube. In the meantime, the other shape of tubes (such as flat or flattened) for finned and un-finned with the optimum design needs more research and investigation due to have lesser air-side pressure drop and improved air-side heat transfer coefficients. They have putted some the significant conclusions from this review.

An Overview on Thermal and Fluid Flow Characteristics in a Plain Plate Finned and Un-Finned Tube Banks Heat Exchanger

Since its inception, laser beam welding as a high-quality fusion joining process has ascertained itself as an established and state of art technology exhibiting tremendous growth in a broad range of industries. This article provides a current state of understanding and detailed review of laser welding of titanium (Ti) alloys with corresponding dissimilar counterparts including steel, aluminium, magnesium, nickel, niobium, copper, etc. Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of critical processing parameters on the metallurgical features, tensile strength, hardness variation, percentage elongation and residual stress. Process modifications to improve dissimilar laser weldability by virtue of techniques such as laser offsetting, split beam, welding-brazing, hybrid welding and materials modifications by means of the introduction of single or multiple interlayers, fillers and pre-cut grooves are exploited. Detailed and comprehensive investigations on the phenomena governing the formation and distribution of the intermetallic phase, material flow mechanisms, their relations with laser parameters and their corresponding impact on the microstructural, geometrical and mechanical aspects of the welds are thoroughly examined. The critical issues related to the evolution of defects and the corresponding remedial measures applied are explored and the characteristics of fracture features reported in the literature are summarised in thematic tables. The purpose of this review is tantamount to emphasise the benefits and the growing trend of laser welding of Ti alloys in the academic sector to better exploit the process in the industry so that the applications are explored to a greater extent.
