The VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey - IX. The interstellar medium seen through diffuse interstellar bands and neutral sodium
J. Th. van Loon,Mandy Bailey,B. L. Tatton,J. Maíz Apellániz,Paul A. Crowther,A. de Koter,Chris Evans,Vincent Hénault-Brunet,Ian D. Howarth,Philipp Richter,Hugues Sana,Sergio Simón-Díaz,Sergio Simón-Díaz,W. D. Taylor,Nolan R. Walborn +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used DIBs as diagnostics of the local interstellar conditions, whilst at the same time deriving properties of the yet-unknown carriers of these enigmatic spectral features.
Journal ArticleDOI
The VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey. IX. The interstellar medium seen through Diffuse Interstellar Bands and neutral sodium
Jacco Th. van Loon,Mandy Bailey,B. L. Tatton,Jesús Maíz Apellániz,Paul A. Crowther,Alex de Koter,Chris Evans,Vincent Hénault-Brunet,Ian D. Howarth,Philipp Richter,Hugues Sana,Sergio Simón-Díaz,William Taylor,Nolan R. Walborn +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, Spectra of over 800 early-type stars from the VLT Flames Tarantula Survey (VFTS) were analysed. Maps were created, separately, for the Galactic and LMC absorption in the DIBs at 4428 and 6614 Ang and -in a smaller region near the central cluster R136 -neutral sodium (Na I D); also measured the Dibs at 5780 and 5797 Ang.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mapping atomic and diffuse interstellar band absorption across the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a dedicated, high signal-to-noise spectroscopic study of two of the strongest DIBs, at 5780 and 5797 \AA, in optical spectra of 666 early-type stars in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, along with measurements of the atomic Na\,{\sc i,D and Ca\,{sc ii,K lines.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probing the Local Bubble with diffuse interstellar bands I. Project overview and southern hemisphere survey
Mandy Bailey,Mandy Bailey,Jacco Th. van Loon,Amin Farhang,Atefeh Javadi,Habib G. Khosroshahi,Peter J. Sarre,Keith T. Smith,Keith T. Smith +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a high signal-to-noise spectroscopic survey of 670 nearby early-type stars to map DIB absorption in and around the Local Bubble.
Journal ArticleDOI
2dF-AAOmega spectroscopy of massive stars in the Magellanic Clouds: The north-eastern region of the Large Magellanic Cloud
TL;DR: In this article, spectral classifications from optical spectroscopy of 263 massive stars in the north-eastern region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are presented, including eleven double-lined spectroscopic binaries.
