Molecular biomarkers of oxidative stress in aquatic organisms in relation to toxic environmental pollutants.

TL;DR: Current knowledge and advances in the understanding of oxidative processes in biological systems are summarized and this knowledge is extended to specific applications in aquatic organisms because of their sensitivity to oxidative pollutants, their filtration capacity, and their potential for environmental toxicology studies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Integrated use of biomarkers (superoxide dismutase, catalase and lipid peroxidation) in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis for assessing heavy metals' pollution in coastal areas from the Saronikos Gulf of Greece.

TL;DR: It is shown that metal pollution in the Elefsis Bay (the most polluted coastal area) causes relatively medium levels of oxidative stress in tissues of mussels due to cellular oxy-radical generation and can be used as potential biomarkers of toxicity for long-term monitoring in marine coastal ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization of atmospheric particulates, particle-bound transition metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of urban air in the centre of Athens (Greece)

TL;DR: The results of this study underlined the importance of local emission sources, especially vehicular traffic, central heating and other local anthropogenic emissions, for reducing traffic-related air pollution in Athens.
Journal ArticleDOI

The importance of natural organic material for environmental processes in waters and soils (Technical Report)

TL;DR: The role and function of natural organic material (NOM) for the terrestrial and aquatic environment is strongly related to nutrient availability for plants, relevant for crop production, as well as to be a source of energy for macroand microorganisms, to influence physico-chemical conditions of soil and sediments and to buffering and exchange capacity as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of the quality of drinking water in regions of Greece

TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive evaluation of drinking water quality from various regions of Greece is presented, and the physicochemical parameters investigated were conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH, as well as related to the treatment of drinking waters such as chloride, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium, heavy metals (including cadmium, copper, lead, chromium and nickel), anions and cations such as fluoride, bromide, nitrates, nitrites, ammonium, sulphates, and phosphates, including dissolved organic carbon).
