Abstract: Hysteresis loops of two-dimensional arrays of magnetic nanowires have been micromagnetically modelled. The calculations focus on magnetostatic interactions in addition to Zeeman and magnetic anisotropy energy terms. Starting from an ideally ordered hexagonal array, the generation of local disorder is first modelled and subsequently, hysteresis loops are calculated by Monte Carlo and iterative methods considering dipolar and higher-order multipole effects. The main conclusions of the modelling are: (i) distortion of the hexagonal ordering results in an increasing effective field to reach magnetic saturation while roughly maintaining coercivity, and (ii) an increase of the average distributed coercivity of individual nanowires gives rise to enhanced coercivity and anisotropy field. The results of these simulations are analysed in view of experimental loops of arrays of Ni nanowires filling nanoporous alumina membranes with different degrees of 2D-polycrystalline arrangement. After a careful analysis by image processing, it is concluded that fluctuations in the diameter and cross-section of individual nanowires play an important role in a deep correlation between modelled and experimental hysteresis loops.

Abstract: The main magnetic characteristics regarding the domain structure and magnetization processes (axial, circular and Matteucci and inverse Wiedemann effects) of amorphous wires and glass-coated microwires are analysed. Magnetic bistability, spontaneously observed in samples with large enough ratio magneto-elastic anisotropy with axial easy axis to shape anisotropy, is the main source for a number of sensor applications in pulse generators, position and field sensors, encoded security tags, rotational counters, magnetostrictive delay lines, and so on. The relevant perspectives of the novel giant magneto-impedance effect recently reported and observed in non-magnetostrictive samples are also introduced.

Abstract: Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in the 10−40 nm size range and with a reduced distribution in size have been synthesized under argon by using ammonium bases R4NOH (R = CH3, C2H5, C3H7) and a hydrothermal treatment. The size is tuned owing to the base to iron ratio and to the length of the alkyl chain R. We precipitate first ferric hydroxides at pH 1.5−2, then ferrous hydroxide at pH 5.5−6. The rapid increase of pH up to basic pH leads to the formation of magnetic iron oxide particles of 12 nm. For [base] to [Fe] ratio above 3.5, a homogeneous growth occurs during further hydrothermal treatment at 250 °C. The higher the quantity of base added and the longer the alkyl chain used, the smaller the particle size produced. For sizes above 20 nm, the Verwey transition at 120 K, characteristic of magnetite, is observed on the field cooling−zero field cooling magnetization curve. Abstract: In this chapter, we will restrict our attention to the ferrites and a few other closely related materials. The great interest in ferrites stems from their unique combination of a spontaneous magnetization and a high electrical resistivity. The observed magnetization results from the difference in the magnetizations of two non-equivalent sub-lattices of the magnetic ions in the crystal structure. Materials of this type should strictly be designated as “ferrimagnetic” and in some respects are more closely related to anti-ferromagnetic substances than they are to ferromagnetics in which the magnetization results from the parallel alignment of all the magnetic moments present. We shall not adhere to this special nomenclature except to emphasize effects, which are due to the existence of the sub-lattices.
