Abstract: Knowledge of alkali concentration in concrete pore solution is key for long-term eval- uation of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) expansion. This study aimed at providing experimental data on the alkalinity evolution in concrete tested for ASR in order to determine critical alkalinity values that stop concrete expansion. The pore solution was systematically expressed (i.e. ex- tracted at high pressures) from concrete speci- mens tested at 38 C over water (Canadian standard). Alkali concentration showed a decreasing trend with time, which can be mainly explained by alkali leaching. After 52 weeks, the decrease in alkalinity was up to 25% of the ori- ginal Na2Oeq content in the concrete, contributing to underestimate long-term expansion of reactive concrete. Comparisons were also made between pore solution expressed out of cement paste specimens and concrete specimens; differences (from 25% to 43% higher for cement paste) suggest that results obtained from cement paste are not suitable for concrete as they tend to overestimate the concrete pore solution alkalin- ity. The alkali concentration threshold varied from one mixture to another (205-335 mmol/l).

TL;DR: A decision chart is proposed in this paper which retains only two rapid test methods: the petrographic examination (ASTM C 295) and the accelerated mortar bar method, in addition to the concrete prism method (CAN/CSA-A23.2-14A) which is much longer but considered the most realistic test for alkali-reactivity.
Abstract: In the past few years, intensive work has been undertaken in Canada on test methods for determining the potential alkali-reactivity of concrete aggregates. The paper summarizes and discusses the principal methods investigated and the results obtained. A decision chart is proposed which retains only two rapid test methods: the petrographic examination (ASTM C 295) and the accelerated mortar bar method (ASTM C 9-Proposal-P 214), in addition to the concrete prism method (CAN/CSA-A23.2-14A) which is much longer but considered the most realistic test for alkali-reactivity.

Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between the microstructure and engineering properties of cement-treated marine clay. The microstructure was investigated using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, pH measurement, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and laser diffractometric measurement of the particle size distribution. The engineering properties that were measured include the water content, void ratio, Atterberg limit, permeability, and unconfined compressive strength. The results indicate that the multitude of changes in the properties and behavior of cement-treated marine clay can be explained by interaction of four underlying microstructural mechanisms. These mechanisms are the production of hydrated lime by the hydration reaction which causes flocculation of the illite clay particles, preferential attack of the calcium ions on kaolinite rather than on illite in the pozzolanic reaction, surface deposition and shallow infilling by cementitious products on clay clusters, as well as the presence of water trapped within the clay clusters.
